Why did Apple on their latest model remove the SD card slot?

You will have to ask Apple. But, they tend to remove ports over time. At one time MBPs had ethernet and Firewire 800 ports, VGA, ....

But, IMHO the slot was unnecessary. My cameras use various types of media (CF, SD, microSD, etc) so I use a USB based card reader. In fact, I don't ever think I have used the SD slot on my 2015 MBP pro.

I suspect for most people a better question would be why is there not a USB-A 3.1 port on the new the MBPs?

But the change is done, and they will never go back. And we will all learn to live with the port decision. But the keyboard is another story...

The idea is that industry should eventually adopt USB-C universally, and that hubs would become cheaper. Unfortunately the computer and tech industry is slow in adopting new standards.

Apple is notorious for removing legacy “features” from their hardware even before they are considered “legacy” items, and Apple isn’t usually aren’t far off in doing this. I mean look at cd drives, headphone jacks (on their phones), and Ethernet ports. I can tell you I’m not missing those items anymore.

Same here except I use the cd drive on occasion and also the headphone jack on my MacBook.

Get BT headphones. No more cord tangle.

And get a USB DVD Drive. I installed the DVD drive from a 2012 MBP into a cheap USB enclosure I got off Amazon for $15 or so. It sits in my drawer. But I least I have it if I ever need it.

FWIW, I see you can now buy a new USB DVD burner for $14. I guess I should have waited.

Question:
"Why did Apple on their latest model remove the SD card slot?"

Answers:
1. To make it thinner!
2. You don't need that slot, anyway. Upload your pics to the cloud, not to the computer!
3. Cheaper to manufacture without it.

I upload my pics to my computer because I do not want them on FB, Twitter, or YouTube! I value my privacy.

I connect my camera with USB to download my pictures. You can also get WiFi enabled SD cards or just an adapter to read them

It's a possibility it just wouldn't have fit on the logic board. Most internal space in a macbook is taken up by batteries these days. The more ports you try to squeeze in along the side of the computer, the less room there will be for battery cells.

Thank goodness my MBP has a SD card reader built in so less bulk on my desk.

Almost certain if you buy any future MBP it will not.

Cloud does not mean Twitter, Facebook, or other social media, because as you say, those platforms have no privacy.

Instead use something like iCloud, AWS, OneDrive, or Google cloud. Your own private password protected cloud storage, where you can control access. This gives you access to your images from any device and your images are backed up in case your computer is lost, stolen, or destroyed, or your house burns down.:(

FWIW, I put my images on a local Storage (NAS) server and also a Cloud server.

I do backup all my photos take on my iOS devices to the iCloud. On my Mac however I rely on a USB backup drive because I have 6K photos on my Mac and 723 videos that I DO NOT WANT on my IOS devices.

My MB Air has a card reader. Since I transfer video to my laptop just about every day having a built in card reader is a plus. I did have a USB 3 card reader that was until I recently lost it. Like dongles, carrying extra connectors is a pain at times.

It’s almost always the first part that fails. For both my MBPs, the slot died before the first year was done. And when I replaced the mother board on my 2012 and it had again a new SD card slot, it died again quite soon.
Dust creeps in and prevents the cards from being read. I tried to clean it but with no avail.
I am so used to use external card readers anyway for the many different types of cards fro the 4 cameras I own, that I won’t miss it a bit.

Bulky? Do you realize you can buy an SD card reader the size of a USB thumb drive? Many of them are anything but bulky.

I too was worked up when the 2016 MBP was released w/o one, but then I realized its not a big deal. I mean, I carry a number of cables and stuff when I travel anyways, its not really a huge inconvenience to carry a card reader and they're not bulky by long shot

I get it, you hate the fact that Apple dropped the sd card reader, but at some point when you're ready to buy a new laptop, you need to either buy a Mac and deal with a card reader, or find a different laptop that includes a card reader.

I've always used external card readers, which provide flexibility in type (CF, SD, Mini-SD, etc.) and also in ability to handle speed. An older Mac with an SD slot may not be able to handle faster, newer memory cards. Card readers, as demonstrated above, take up very little space on one's desk and/or in one's bag. Why fuss about it?
