I've been reading around and still cant completely understand.

macbook pros have sdxc card slots while macbook airs have sd card readers.. from what ive read that would tell me the air would only support sdhc (maybe) and sd cards while the macbook pros can read sdxc (exfat). but in the faq apple says that the air's sd card can read them all. can anyone explain the advantages of the pros sdxc slot? thanks in advance

This might help some of your inquiries-

The 2011 MBA supposedly supports SDXC-
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/macbook_air_13inch_mid2011_ug.pdf

Basically, SD is good up to 2GB (FAT16), SDHC is good up to 32GB (FAT32), and SDXC can go up to 2TB (exFAT). SDXC comes pre formatted as exFAT, but not all things are compatible. 10.6.5 and beyond I believe can read exFAT just fine (assuming hardware allows), but perhaps certain cameras and whatnot cannot (in which then you could format it to FAT32, but even then some cameras can't do FAT32-formatted SDXCs). I think.

I have a 2011 13" MacBook Air and I use a 64GB SDXC card with no problems.

That doesn't really answer your question, but hopefully you can use SDXC just fine as well and avoid the confusion.
