No wonder Apple claims SE3 has better battery life!

SE3 has a 7.82 Whr battery, compared to SE2 6.96 Whr. These numbers come from Apple's legal compliance documents updated on 3/10.

It'll be really interesting to see how Apple has managed to squeeze a larger batter inside the chassis. The Taptic Engine is very likely smaller (same as iPhone 13). It's also likely Apple removed some antennas as SE3 no longer supports gigabit LTE.

why on earth would the 2022 iPhone SE not support gigabit LTE? I’m not seeing the full spec sheet on their page but I think this you have in error.

But you’re forgetting the fact that A15 in the SE3 is more efficient than the A14 in the 12 Mini. The SE3 also has a smaller screen.
You’re also getting to 12 mini has two cameras to power it also has a much higher resolution even though it’s an OLED screen that’s a smaller chassis battery sizes is battery smaller in the 12 mini

Imo best expectation would be that it is as good as the 12 mini or as bad as the 2020 SE. Probably in between. Thing is, many people here bashed the 12 mini on its poor battery life, yet I don't understand why people are expecting good battery life from this SE, when Apple themselves indicated that at best, it matches the 12 mini battery life.

Fair point. Often times, it helps to temper expectations in the middle rather than looking for outright good or bad.

Because words like “good” or “bad” are extremely relative in the smartphone world.

Generally speaking, the iPhone SE crowd consists of folks who aren’t phone addicts. They don’t sit on social media all day, constantly take photos, or watch movies on their iPhone. They care about talking, occasional texting, and navigation directions once in a blue moon.

Suffice to say, their needs are different. So if battery life on the new SE is even remotely comparable to 12 Mini, then it could be considered “eternity”.

I don’t think any SE user expects incredible battery life. And if they do, then they’re buying the wrong iPhone.

Even though it is more efficient, if someone is more than a light phone user, he or she will need to charge the SE 3 during the day. Otherwise, the SE 3 probably won't make it through the day, especially being in weak cell areas.

That's a huge assumption. You don't need to be social media addicts to need better battery life. Seems like you still have the assumption of casual user being feature phone users. That's false imo. Today's casual users of smartphone can be chatting on whatsapp all day and watching youtube. Even my parents, who are tech-illiterate, are video calling via whatsapp/wechat with their friends and watching youtube all the time. That's the today's casual user.

People who get the SE will probably be people who want the iPhone/Apple brand at the lowest price. I'm still hopeful for reviews, but I don't have high expectation.

Your parents are clearly addicted to their phones. Hence my point. That’s what we call social media addicts. Sure, for them the SE probably sucks.

Most addicts who can’t afford a new iPhone wouldn’t buy the new SE. They would buy a used iPhone 11 or 12 instead for nearly the same price as the new SE.

They value screen size and battery too much in order to switch to an SE.

SE is for people who don’t care about big screens and incredible battery life. If they did, they would buy a used iPhone 11 or 12 instead.

Brand new SE with 256 costs $579. You can easily find a used iPhone 12 256 for the same price.

No they're not addicts. Without the smartphone, they would still be on the calls with their friends, just using landline phone, and they will still be watching the shows, but on their TV. It's just the devices have changed, into a smartphone.

An addict means they cannot stop using the smartphone. My parents have no problem not using the smartphone, ie going back to the older tech.

Like I said, your definition of casual still stuck in the days of feature phones. That's no longer the case. What you think as "addicts" are basically normal tasks that people do today.

If you rely on your phone for alarm, calendar, and reminder, does that mean you're addicted to your phone? No.

If somebody watches shows and movies on their smartphone, it means they’re phone addicts. I don’t care how you try to spin it. If that’s the new norm, as you put it, it still doesn’t make them any less of an addict. Cocaine is also the norm in parts of California. Doesn’t mean people doing it aren’t addicts.

You could argue that most people watch shows and movies on their smartphones. And if that’s the case, then yes, it would imply that most people are addicted to their phones. I’m not surprised.

But I can’t imagine any phone addict in 2022 is dumb enough to buy the new iPhone SE when they can easily have a much better viewing experience on used iPhones that cost less.

Missing the point. My point was that activities that you consider to be “addicts” are what real casual use of phones today. So I disagree that you mentioned how the SE was for casual users, as I pointed out the modern casual use case is not comfortable anymore with the small battery of the SE.

Anyway, this discussion is inching towards insults so I won’t continue. Ciao.

Hahaha. Watching shows and making phone calls makes them addicts? That’s fresh. So talking on the phone and watching a television would make them addicts too? It just a different way to consume entertainment. Now if they didn’t feed their children or play with them because they were on their phones then THAT would make them addicts.

For someone coming from the SE2 (with 2-year old “90%” battery), getting 12 mini level is already an improvement.

My SE2 is pretty much on standby the whole day (use PCs and iPads primarily) but even then, I still need to charge the phone twice a day. Nowadays, I just keep it on a wireless charging dock semi-permanently when I’m at the office.

Whoa, having to charge twice a day even on stand by is annoying for sure. My 7+ has mediocre battery life, but standby time is just awesome. If I use it, it can barely last half a day to a full day, but at standby, it can probably last for 3 days or longer... :D

MKBHD wasn't too excited about the battery life... Seems like it's not going to be that much better from the 2020 SE.

No wifi plus 2-3 bars signal at work doesn’t make for a good combo.

Mind, the battery life expectations of someone used to, say, the iPhone 13 Pro Max or Androids with 5000 mAh batteries would naturally be higher than someone used to worse.

I have an iPhone 12 mini which pretty much just functions as an occasional glorified 5G hotspot. That’s got way better standby than my SE2.

Some power usage numbers for comparison.

Weibo | 30 minutes
Navigation | 15 minutes
Video recording | 20 minutes
Taking photos | 30 minutes
Honor of Kings 60FPS on Wi-Fi
Standby | 45 minutes

SE3 comes out with 23% battery life left. SE2 shut down after gaming.

Something is wrong with your SE2 if you need to charge twice a day…

Poor network conditions + small aging battery + exposure to very high temps during SoCal summer. Battery has degraded after 2-3 years on pretty much all iPhones (3.5-4.7”) I’ve used. 🤷‍♀️

Mind, back when the SE2 was still new, I’d still have 50+% remaining at the end of the day. Feels like the battery on this degraded more quickly than my iPhone 7.

I watched MKBHD review, and you have to remember he is an EXTREME power user. He used the phone all day playing games, taking pictures, shooting video (probably in 4K) and said that the battery is average at best, which means for a light/medium user, the battery should be decent enough and better than the SE 2020 for sure.

I really like Marques, but like some of the other reviewers, he said if it had a 120 mhz screen it would be a better experience etc, rather than review the iphone based on its target market.

Anyway its looks pretty good to me, better battery life similar to the 12 mini, and a very good camera with all the new features apart from night mode. All those Android phones at the same price point with quad cameras etc, fast refresh screens, modern designs etc are fine and dandy, but none of them will have the performance, snappiness or ability to take pictures better than the new SE.

Buy it from apple, if it disappoints, return it.

Let us win tomorrow, I’ll throw in $50 towards your iPhone? 😁😂

Haha we need the win to secure 4th place, and you need it to push for the title. Liverpool so strong though, even without Salah and Mane you beat us 2-0 at the Emirates in the league cup 😢 ☹️. Will be a good game though, both teams in form.

Sorry everyone for change of subject 'Soccer' talk.

You guys are in great form at the moment, won’t be one way traffic this time, both teams with a lot to play for, don’t think I can handle losing the title again in another close finish. 😩 I’ve experienced it more times than i'd like recently.

May the better team win.

What’s the go with the SE? You pulling the trigger on one?

Yes will trade in my SE 2020, Apple will give me £120 for it, then pay the rest and add it to my collection. Will alternate with my 12 mini, as whatsapp has the multi device feature now so happy days.

Nice!!! You’ll end up paying peanuts for it with the trade in. 👌

No go for me, $719 over here. 😬

That Liverpool red looks stunning, DAMN!!! Looking forward to seeing some pics when you get it.
