I just purchased a Seagate Backup Plus for Mac 1TB. After installing and opening the program I did not see an icon for backing up my hard drive to the external drive. Only icons which permitted sharing information from Facebook and other social media which is not my interest. I only wish to back up my hard drive to the external. I found a video on the software which informed me that the Seagate won't allow for backing up and I should use Apple Time Machine. If I cannot back my hard drive (documents, iTunes library, photos) what good is the Seagate at all? It's a waste of money. Am I completely mistaken?

Time Machine is the software in the Mac that will back up your data. You need a device to back that data up to, which is where your Seagate drive comes in.

The instructions for configuring Time Machine are found here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

Follow the steps under "Setting up Time Machine backups using an external drive". Time Machine will continuously back up any changed files on an hourly basis, just leave the drive plugged in and let Time Machine do its thing.
