Restarted my iMac and swapped it to different USB port and it seems to have recognised it this time! Woop Woop!

No need to worry now!
 
Sounds like a bad USB port.

actually, certain usb ports in the imac don't provide enough power to run external usb drives. same with the macbooks. i forget the exact sequence, but it's consistent across all imacs.

well, not "bad" as in it's broken. that's just how the usb ports are connected to each other. some provide more power than others.
