We have several of the Seagate Goflex 1TB ultra portable 800 firewire drives for mac.

They tend to disconnect when using the firewire attached to any of our MBP 2011s. It occurs with the MBP on and off AC power.

They work fine when using USB, and work fine with firewire and an iMac, but not MBP and firewire.

I think the MBP doesn't have enough power to the firewire to consistently run the drive.

edit: I found this thread, appears the issue is widespread across different manufacturers, including wd

Anyone else have this issue ? thoughts?

Check the Goflex forums. There's a huge thread over there with issues with them sleeping/waking. If you get Finder hangs that can only be resolved by unplugging the drive, that's your problem. I had to scrap GoFlexes and go with WD MyBook Studio's
