I wonder how long until certain unscrupulous people/companies/consortiums start fabricating these? It likely already has happened. Counterfeits of all sorts of things abound.
Unfortunately, its not hard to reseal with a heat gun. I'm sure people do it with other products. That's why you hear people complain that amazon products they receive are sealed but obviously used.

The incident with a youtuber and faked box of pokemon cards is what has put me off the idea of 'factory sealed' collectors items. From what I remember the youtuber bought what he thought was a rare box of pokemon cards, meant to be factory sealed and planned to do a revel on his youtube channel but when he opened the factory sealed box it contained other cards that should never have been in the box. He had been scammed. Turns out someone found a pokemon retail box, filled it with individual packs of pokemon cards so it would retain it's proper weight and then used a factory sealer to seal the box up to make it look like it was 'factory fresh'.

Even with this iphone auction I would still be skeptical that there is an original iphone in there. Just because someone tells you a story does not mean that story is true.

I suppose you could have the box x-rayed to see if the contents look unused but the only way to be 100% sure is to open it and check which destroys the value. The plastic wrap Is easy to re-apply..
No - the plastic wrap is not easy to re-apply in the same method/materials as was used by Apple factories when the iPhone was launched.

People literally authenticate the plastic wrap on sealed items like this.

I've only purchased an iPhone 7 Plus sealed brand new but is that how the plastic of an iPhone 2G sealed brand new look like? Looks resealed to me...

A lot of money, yes, but people like origin stories.

I wish new iPhones would come in a plastic wrap sealed. I hate the paper tabs. It looks tacky in my opinion.

Yes. everythingapplepro purchased a a supposedly new never opened iPhone on ebay and found out it was a scam by x-raying the contents..
All it would take is to get a nonfunctional phone and carefully repackage. Xray would pass flying colors. Heck, certain groups/people/consortiums would counterfeit the packaging as closely as possible and wrapping as well if it was worth their while. May not fool a very dedicated connoisseur or researcher but for most people it would. Same as how many fake "antique" coins and stamps fly out of certain locations and end up being resold as originals to unsuspecting people.

And you think there's a lot of people who remember the exact way the boxes were wrapped? If it's close they fool people who are willing to buy something like this. As I stated, everythingapplepro got scammed in the same way and an x-ray was how he found out that the contents weren't as stated in the listing. He posted a video on his YouTube channel a couple of years ago when it happened

I agree, in his case the accessories were not coiled/placed/packaged properly and you could tell

Never understood technology nostalgia. Yes, it's ok to remember the old days but in no way would I want to go back to using Windows 98 or owning a copy.

I join all of you who wish I had an original. I love the two-tone color of the back.
I have an old 3G sitting around, but it needs some TLC - new battery, volume button, and back case. :(
