That indicates we need to really increase tax bracket to anyone earning 50M or more a year to 90% and no capabilities of deduction. (Stock options to be included as well, remove the Clinton back door, and remove the Reagan share buyback ruling in 1982 as well)

What an absolute waste of money. Glad to see people would still rather buy useless old crap than, I dunno, make a charity donation or something.

The problem is certain population has run out of things to buy so the only thing left is buying obsolete electronics as a way to keep score amongst each other. When the majority of productivity gains and profits go to the tip of the pyramid this becomes the new game amongst each other.

What do people do with these things? Are they collectors items held for investment purposes? Or do people just display them in their living room as proof that they can afford such things?

buying obsolete electronics is fine, reusing or repurposing is good. Using an old piece of kit for just fixing hobby value or even display value etc is perfectly grand too and keeps things out of landfills as well as being cool. What's absurd here is it's people paying massive sums of money to essentially display a box of the electronic item in question that literally cannot be opened, used, or admired itself because that would, apparently, tank the value. This is purely a status thing, because for the shrinkwrapped box in your display case to have value or be anything other than silly people have to have seen a headline or been told there actually is a phone in there, promised it, but there is no way to actually interact with the thing, even visually.

My hunch is, you'll have to wait forever. The iPhone truly changed the world, so I understand why a sealed mint condition gen 1 would attract collectors, although I find the price sale price absurd. The iPhone dented the universe. The Apple Watch did not, so I wouldn't expect a first gen watch to be worth much even decades from now.

Fair enough, with the AW you either love it or you don't. I bought and tucked this watch away before I even bought and started using one for myself so I get it. Now I feel naked without one, my current watch, I think its a 7, only comes off when its time to shower. The battery lasts all day, all night, I put it on the charger while I shower and start getting ready for work, when my phone notifies me its fully charged, it goes back on the wrist. Yeah, I'm probably not the norm, but, again, I think I waited until S3 or S4 before getting one for myself so having one certainly changed my attitude about them... Someone else in this thread suggested tucking away an AWU0 with my S0, I'm considering it...

I think that's a bit excessive of a clapback. I read @glenthompson's comment. It didn't make much sense to me, but it seemed pretty clear he meant ROI in the layman's sense to mean "profit." But you're right, most people don't understand finance and business... because most people aren't that privileged and some of the people here are actually still teenagers.

Anyway, since we're kinda talking about investing money here, people who are about to sink lots of money into gobs of extra Apple gear so they can rake in lots of cash need to consider the following:
  • Most of the stuff you buy won't be worth that much
  • Some of the stuff will actually lose value or be very hard to sell
  • Good chance some of it gets lost or damaged
  • You're gonna have to store it and keep track of it
  • For the value to skyrocket, you'll need a lot more than 15 years
  • Even if it ends up being worth a fortune, you might be dead by then
Like all investing, this kind of investing involves risk so if you can't afford to lose the money you're investing, don't do it.
All good points including my "excessive clapback"

I don‘t know, reminds me of that time when EverythingApplePro bought a fake „sealed“ OG iPhone (Link).
I was thinking the same. I really hope this is not the ACTUAL picture of the sold device, because the one in the picture is not factory-sealed, but resealed.

What can I get for sealed (never opened) official 30 pin Apple connector to Component video cables? LOL

I have about 3 of them. Haha
I recently checked eBay for the value of some of my stuff:

//e $25
IIgs (Woz) $35

Oh well, I'l just have to go with my SSI. :)

Would the battery not be literally completely dead by then? lol.. 15 years of being dead probably destroyed that battery
My 3G's battery started corroding and releasing gas after being left dead in the drawer for a year. It inflated itself and cracked the screen and body. Who knows, unless they do an X-ray on this thing the device probably met a similar fate.

FWIW I still have a first gen iPod touch that’s got a usable og battery, a lot of this is pretty variable

Hey, if you have the money to burn, why not? I'm sure this person will make some money on this if they ever decide to sell it.

My comment wasn't intended to diss the Apple Watch. I have one and like it. I don't wear it all the time, but it's great for when I'm doing something active. I just don't see the Apple Watch being a sought after collectible like an original iPhone. I don't think first gen iPads will ever fetch these kind of prices either. The iPhone shook the Earth. It changed everything. The devices that followed have all been built around multi-touch and, in many ways, are quite similar to the iPhone. Who knows, though. You might have the last laugh 20 years from now!

That's what I did.

You can use the serial number checking service on Apple’s own website to see if the phone was ever activated, but I haven't seen anyone else use scanning to definitively prove whats inside the box (without opening it).

In my opinion the one that just sold from this article may have been resealed, the plastic wrap looks very loose.
I have a sealed iPhone 3GS, and the shrinkwrap looks much more like your picture than the one in the auction. But it also depends where it was stored and how the temperature affected it. The seams are a close enough match to my 3GS that it could still be original, resealed ones have struggled to get believable factory-like seams. I'm going to guess that if legitimate, it has been stored in a hotter environment causing the shrinkwrap to expand, NOT a good thing for the battery inside as those also like to expand in hot temperatures.

I also wouldn't like to see the carrier sticker missing, though this picture seems to show the residue of one. The sticker can be peeled off since it's on the outside, but I'd question how/why it happened. My 3GS has the carrier sticker and there aren't any signs of it peeling naturally.

I likely would not bid on this even if I had the money, but things like this raise the value of my 3GS (hundreds not thousands, but it's still something) :)

Of the millions people have spent... literally the ONLY TIME an Apple device HASN’T been considered a depreciating asset….

Yikes. So I have one of these, the exact same one with 1.0 firmware, sealed. Not sure what to do with it now that it seems the prices are skyrocketing on them, it’s really hard to hold on to it when I could theoretically pay off all of my student loans with it

Maybe it's time to sell mine.. Nah I will wait till it gets over 100k.
Not gonna believe you without some proof 😁

Since it's sealed, would you open it and destroy its value? Probably not, which means the buyer essentially just bought a box.

And if you don't open it, it will never be seen by anyone. Which seems to me just...odd.
The boxes are still fun to display, I have a portion of a display case dedicated to my few sealed Apple products. People are surprised when I say they were never opened. I like to think that I'm saving them for some interesting retro unboxings in the future, meaning it will be seen by someone at some point. Like this one Luke Miani did on a decade-old sealed MacBook – given how much he said he paid I'm guessing my sealed MacBook has appreciated in value by at least a few hundred since I bought it :)
