The dedicated ChatGPT search engine that OpenAI developed is rolling out to all users starting today, OpenAI announced as part of its 12 days of OpenAI event.

SearchGPT was added to ChatGPT in late October, providing improved AI-based searches right from the ChatGPT app and web interface. According to OpenAI, SearchGPT is able to search the web in a "much better way than before," providing links to relevant web sources along with contextual information and support for follow-up questions.

When it first debuted, SearchGPT was limited to those who subscribed to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Teams, but it will now also be coming to free users.

During today's announcement, OpenAI said that its AI search has been improved over the last few months, making it faster and better on mobile. There's also a new option to search as you converse with ChatGPT, and to make ChatGPT Search the default engine for browsers like Chrome.

OpenAI is bringing search to logged in ChatGPT users, so it will be available globally on all platforms that support ChatGPT.

Nice! I’ve been finding ChatGPT super helpful as a developer lately, much more useful than Google search ever was. I haven’t tried their search yet but considering how bad Google has made their search in recent years, we have nowhere to go but up.

Well, when I use chatgpt is always says it only has access to info stopping 2 years ago. Will this use up to date info? Also this will be more useful than google since chatgpt won't show you sites that paid google to show up.

It'd be nice to have the option to use it instead of Google in Safari too. The only reason I use Google at all is out of habit of it being in the address bar, but it's generally for getting to something quickly that I don't need information on. If it's a more nuanced question it goes to SearchGPT instead

Today I use DuckDuckGo as search engine so I can be as anonymous as possible.
Does anyone know if SearchGPT only takes my questions to train the model without linking to my identity (PII data)?

I've almost stopped using Safari or Chrome for search. I have the MacGPT app, and it's much, much more comprehensive for research that doesn't need to be a week or less old.

I've been using this since its introduction for Pro users some time ago, and it's been pretty good, though sometimes as usual you can get more complete answers to your question by asking it again after rephrasing it, or asking it to expand on only one or two particular parts of your question.

This is a good reminder for me to switch away from Google. My tests so far with GPT search have produced excellent results.

I shifted to Duckduckgo, have been happy.

You could set up local rag that uses DDG plus local LLM model.

Just trying it now. It’s… different. I don’t know if it’s better than a traditional search engine, but it could be good for some specific types of search inquiries. That said… I don’t think I’ll be using it again anytime soon, lol.

It’s called DuckDuckGo. A search should not require the power of an H200 otherwise society will pay for it in very bad ways.
Some sources report that DuckDuckGo consumes more energy per query compared to Google. More so, carbon impact is reported to be 2.2 times higher than the average for other search engines.

Energy usage per search:
Google: 0.0003 kWh
DuckDuckGo: 0.0003-0.0005 kWh
ChatGPT: 0.0029 kWh

It's important to note that Google's reported energy usage figures may precede the introduction of Gemini responses in some searches, suggesting that Google's current energy consumption might be higher than previously reported.

Never use Google to search now. Google deliberately gives you false results so you click on as many pages as possible to give them more revenue. It’s become useless. ChatGPT gives you answer you want instantly. Google could have done that but decided not to for the revenue. I hope ChatGPT bankrupts Google. The waste of precious time spent on Google search is criminal.

Will try this out today. Happy that all are having access now. Might be useful. Would have liked it even more if logging in was optional to use the feature.

can't wait until OpenAi starts selling featured search results (ie paid advertising) to its users on SearchGPT

It's only a matter of time

OpenAI has proposed the possibility of incorporating advertisements into the platform in the future.
