This is why, if Apple quadruple iPad resolution, it can't named iPad display "Retina" --> (translated in english from italian) http://bit.ly/fnDNXB

Depends on the difference in distance people use an iPad at versus an iPhone.

iPhone - 10 to 18 inches.
iPad - 18 to 24 inches -> can achieve "Retina" with a lower PPI. But as I write above, the extra resolution required for this even would put a real strain on the CPU/GPU in a tablet device.

OLED scares me. I care about battery life and a lot of my use is note taking and iBooks, both of which are pretty simple sheet-of-paper type of display of black text on a white background. For my usage I suspect that a switch to OLED would hurt my battery life quite a lot.

It could still be less than an LCD, which works by BLOCKING always-on light from behind. An OLED only generates light where needed. For reading you can lower the contrast as well by reducing the brightness (make the paper colour darker).

Retina

There goes all of your stupid retina display dreams. Retina display my ass... iPad will not have higher resolution than my 17 inch MBP!

Not stupid at all. iPad as an e-reader could benefit tremendously from a Retina display---way more than an iPhone.

Unrealistic perhaps; just too expensive right now.

I agree but, first point, it would be difficult to explain to the press.
Second, I don't think the "strain" is a big deal considering that battery technology evolves and that the iPhone 4 has doubled the resolution without any battery problem.

This is good news. I want an iPad 2G for my Photography business (showing photos to potential customers). I can't stand the cartoon look OLED displays exhibit (in most cases). I want the more color accurate IPS technology.

I don't know about the Galaxy phones, but I found out that if you turn off the Power Saving Mode on the Galaxy Tab display settings, it instantly jumps from a blue cast to a purer white.

PS. Heck, some people holding iPhone 4's next to other iPhone 4's complain about their "yellow" LCDs.

Samsung Galaxy Tab uses LCD, not pentile AM-OLED, because they knew it suck.

What is with people fixating on the iPad resolution, it's a fantastic display and books, text, games look incredible on it. 300dpi on a screen (which is what those wanting a retina display are asking for) is ridiculous and unnecessary.
I wouldn't say completely unnecessary, but probably a little over-the-top. Looking at web pages would be nicer because I wouldn't have to zoom in to the text so much.

I'd be interested in how they might go about marketing an iPad with a higher PPI. Technically speaking, if they double the pixels on the iPad then the PPI will still be lower than the iPhone (264 vs 326)*. Since Apple talked about the PPI of the iPhone being some kind of "magic number" where the naked eye couldn't see individual pixels, I wonder if they could possibly say the same for an iPad. Their only alternatives would be either to make the iPad a smaller device (something users might be annoyed by), or change the resolution of the display (something developers would definitely be annoyed by).
