Hi here is my problem. My father wants me to figure out a way to secure his external hardrive. I have searched in google and haven't found anything on this. Basically all he wants to do is make it so you have to enter a password to access it. We use all macs in our house so it doesn't need to be compatible with windows but if it is that would be cool to.

Thanks in advance everyone all of you always help me.

A decent solution:

Back up all files he has on the external drive and format it.

Use Disk Utility to create a password-protected disk image the size of the hard drive, placing it on the hard drive.

Now your dad can plug in the hard drive, mount the disk image, and store/retrieve all his files from the disk image.
