The almost 7 year old iPhone 6s is still receiving updates. Apple released a security update for iOS 12 last year that included the iPhone 5s, which was released in 2013. The oldest Mac supported by macOS Monterey is 9 years old. Where are you getting "unlikely more than 2 years" from?

Apple typically only release security update for macOS 2 years after being replaced by newest version. So this year would be mark end of macOS Catalina.

I don’t have high hope of Apple supporting old OS for long, Apple just doesn’t have this track record.

We will see how this will end up, but for now, I don’t trust Apple.

This is a thing that should have been implemented a decade ago. It never made sense to me that Apple had to recompile the entire OS and the users had to re download everything for security patches. It slows down adoption, it’s time consuming for both parties… Wow, we’re moving, slowly but I’ll take it. Next year, maybe we’ll have separate updates for stock apps instead of them being bundled in the OS? Crossing fingers.

Doesn’t Apple have the highest adoption rates of OS updates, at least compared to Android?

I don’t think this will change anything but it will add those security updates. Hopefully they download of cellular and will stop car warranty calls.

Remember when they were going to do something like this for older versions of iOS and then didn’t?

I really wish they would patch older versions of iOS. But if they did that they wouldn’t have grandsons like me buying new iPads for their grandparents as often.

This is huge! I can't believe it has take this long to get security fixes outside of full OS upgrades.

Didn’t they say that stock iOS apps could be updated independently as well but that never happens..

What are you talking about? Apple support devices for 5 years at a minimum.

Yes, but what crazy person ever allows Apple to install a delta update anyway? That hasn't been safe for years, if it ever was at all.

Is this somehow different because the delta is smaller?

Nope and not different. In addition, as we know Apple's first shot at any new technology sucks. They had to get it done for the Keynote, but that has not meant in recent years that it will work correctly until about version x.4 or x.5.

Ah you mean the OS itself not the hardware. Ok.... fair enough. Personally I think it's a waste of time to keep older code patched when you should and could be running the latest code (being the latest OS itself). Older iOS versions from 3 years ago still receive the occasional security patches for large exploits.

This is nice and very necessary, but this should also apply to Apple’s built in apps as well, both of which Android has been doing since it came out.

Just glad this is finally going to be a thing.

My old 2009 MacBook Pro 15" is still perfectly functional, but the OS render this machine unusable. Luckily, I still able to use Catalina Patcher to get Catalina installed on this machine.

All the Intel Mac has this kind of irony where when Apple stop supporting these Macs, it makes better Windows machine than Mac...

We shouldn't really proud of how well Apple support its old devices, Microsoft support Windows way longer than Apple support its MacOS.

It is remain to see how long will Apple support its Apple Silicon Macs, I am still holding off purchasing Apple Silicon based Macs, as my Intel Mac is still doing well.

Is there a way to manually request the security update? Or is it automatic or nothing?

Really curious how this will be written. Just another version bump? Or something like Google's by months?
