I did a search for "iOS firewall" and "open ports" but found nothing.

Does iOS 6 have a firewall like OS X does? How buttoned down are the ports in iOS?

Reason I ask is that I want to know if it is safe to connect my iPhone to WiFi where there are other computers on the network.

Ports are dynamically blocked and apps are sandboxed anyway. You would need a malicious app and then you'd need to have personal data in that app or give it access to personal data.

You are safe on other networks.

That said I wouldn't do my taxes on my iPhone at Starbucks, common sense goes a long way too.
