I installed the update with really bizarro results last night on my iBook 1.2 GHZ. I clicked "Software Update", started the download and left the machien to do its thing. I placed it on my desk, which is about 15 feet away from my bed, where I was reading. Well, everything seemed to be going well until the middle of the download (or maybe it was during "optimizing HD"), at which point the screen went black...then red...then yellow...then some other funky color. Finally all went black. No sign of life. I had to reboot. Rebooting took a looooong time but finally the computer revived itself. It's been acting "normally" ever since.

I was thinking, holy ***t, the computer crashed while it was updating the system software = I'll have to start up using a CD and reinstall everything = a mess. Not so. Don't know what happened but I'm glad it's over.

Never had any kind of problem using Software Update before. At all.

Yahoo Mail Download Problems

I'm sorry if someone else mentioned this already, I was only able to read through about 3 pages before deciding to post. Since the recent update, I have not been able to download word documents from Yahoo! Mail properly using Safari. Everything worked fine in IE, but Safari is not cutting it. Any thoughts?

Archive and install will correct the problem..but...

Since the update, all iMacs G3 CRT, G3 LCD, G4 LCD work.. however, the PowerBook G4 12" is hosed.. can't get past "Login window starting"...

A genius at the Cucamonga Apple store says the same thing happened with his 12". Be sure to keep your 10.3 disks handy if owning a PBook G4. You may end up having to do an archive and install maneuver to correct your new flaptop.. err screwed laptop.

:O

Unable to microsurgery this one. I couldn't figure out how to know via Find which files were affected because either the created/modified dates were other than Dec 2, or they are hidden files that Find won't look for or something... so I did as the genius suggested and am happy to say that archive and install worked, and doing the Combo update from 10.3.0 to 10.3.6 with all the other updates and 3 security updates within 2 or 3 restarts has produced a working 10.3.6 fully updated with no log in issues hence-forth.. which makes me wonder still, what the fV@|< screwed it up in the first place.. Was it haxies? Was it some plug-in somewhere to internet or quicktime or what could have prevented log-in..? Will this happen again in the future when similar components are updated after probably reinstalling or replacing whatever caused the conflict this time which will likely eventually happen.. ? Ugh..

I still have the archived system that existed when I couldn't startup.. Is there any sure way to analyze what's in the archive to figure out where the startup-issue came from?? I'd love to know..

As with "archive and install" on the OS.. same here.

Yes.. Wipe out your safari install including cached files. Reinstall the latest safari. Repair permissions.. all that.

Some users may have an issue installing this update

I'm not normally one to nag aboout waiting before installing software updates, but there may be a somewhat serious issue for some users. I have a 12" PowerBook, and after installing, the computer sits at "Login Window Starting", with the blue bar going on and on... It's sat there for 7+ hours with nothing happening. It seems the only solution is to do the archived install.

I talked to an AppleCare specialist, and that's what he told me to do, and he also asked me to send him, from the archived system folder:

private/var/log/install.log
private/var/log/system.log
/library/logs/softwareupdate.log

The AppleCare guy was going to charge me the $40 bucks or something for phone support, but after telling him the symptoms, and that my computer just went down less than a week before a very important final that I needed my computer for, he was able to get me on line with a specialist. Unfortunately, they can't really help you more than telling you to do the archive install, but it seems as if they are trying to find a fix to the problem, and it also seems there are quite a few people having the problem.

Now, if I could just find my 10.3 disks...

REPAIR PERMISSIONS BEFORE installing ANY updater.

Then REPAIR PERMISSIONS again, AFTER you have installed the updater.

😱

I will admit that I haven't done repair permissions prior to and installation. Didn't realize that it was of a significance.

I will admit that Repair Permissions before software update is a bit of VooDoo.

My voodoo is sorta like saying: "I used to have these headaches until I stopped hitting myself on the head."

I have had problems with a few machines after software updates, until I started repairing permissions before installing the update.

Now I Repair Permissions before and after software updates every time.
... saved me the effort of taking the unit down for hard drive reformat and software reloading.
... saved me from the face to face whining of Users who are faced with unexpected extended down time.

But, hey. If you didn't have any problems with the updaters: Be Happy !!!
