wrldwzrd89 said:All I did was add entries to my hosts file, then copied the file to /etc and renamed it "hosts" (with no extension and without the "quotes"). If you have no idea how to get to /etc, you can use the Finder's Go To Folder feature in the Go menu. Just type "/etc" (without the "quotes") in the dialog box, press Return, and the /etc folder's contents will be displayed. The hosts file lives in there.
cshuman said:I've wondered this for quite a while, but why do we have to restart after the updates? If we know what has been updated couldn't we just stop and restart the service that has been updated? It sure would be nice to be able to make that claim over some other os's.
I am probably not fully understanding everything that goes into the updates.
Chris
That behavior seems completely normal if you have disk use disabled. If you had it enabled before, the update might have reset it because the .plist the setting was stored in was corrupted. An earlier poster reported System Preferences settings being reset - I believe corrupted .plists to be the cause of this too.ScotRobson said:https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1344408#post1344408
Has anyone had the same problem as the above thread since installing this security update?

That is very strange. I think that the reason disk use can't be disabled is because iTunes somehow thinks that the iPod is busy. I've had this particular issue before, and I fixed it by quitting iTunes, doing a software reset on the iPod, and trying again.ScotRobson said:Actually ive just re- read your post. Im not sure what i had before, but all i use my iPod for is to put my music on it and when it used to be mounted a pic of an ipod used to appear on my desktop.

Since I don't have a 4G iPod (mine's a 3G), and I happened to have the Apple Support page open at the time, I'll simply direct you there.ScotRobson said:Could you be so kind as to tell me how to do a software reset on the iPod? That is correct. I did not see a post explaining the procedure of what to do with the hosts file. I did read about someone doing something to the hosts file which prevented "pop" ads. Your explanation may have come later in the thread from the page I was reading or you may have posted after I had already opened the thread, therefore not seeing any post explaining the procedure. I do see your explanation quoted in rdowns post (#127), just below your post which is quoted in this post. Whoa, that sounds postal.wrldwzrd89 said:Did you not see my above post explaining this???

I got so frustrated, I wiped clean and did a fresh install of Panther. Guess what? The apps still don't launch! What is happening?

sahnert said:i think this update broke my ability to connecta to a samba share on my school network. When i try to connect i get "error code -39," "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in smb://.... could not be read or written" Anybody else having this problem or have an idea for a fix?
Can I "undo" this security update? like maybe using the 10.3.8 combo installer? Thanks for any help.

MacBandit said:Sounds like a privileges error. Either you have incorrect privilege settings or you need to change a setting somewhere.
sahnert said:I normally am connected via ethernet in my dorm to the campus network. I just recently installed a wireless card in my PB and have been successfully using the wireless access points around campus. So i tried to access this samba share while working wirelessly and I got the message that my username or password was incorrect. But it never prompted me for those things. It used to prompt me every time (when it was working). So I tried logging out and logging back in again (from my user account on the computer, not the network) and thats when I started getting the message that "some data cannot be read or written".
wdlove said:Well I'm probably among the last. Today up turned off my external Firewire HD. Installed iPod Updater 2005-03-27 289 MB, iSight Update 1.0.3 980 KB, & Security Update 1.0 15.4 MB. Ran Repair Permissions and restarted my Power Mac. Everything seems to be running normally, haven't noticed any changes.
