    Hey folks,

Can anyone advise on the wisdom (or otherwise) of buying a 2008/9-ish Mac Pro, used, from eBay or such? For instance:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APPLE-MAC-PRO...esktops_CV&hash=item2a105ec8f5#ht_1110wt_1055

I think the cases are excellent. I'm almost not bothered about the kit inside, because I figure I can swap it out with new bits later on... but does it work like that? As in, can I buy a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc. Or are certain bits inaccessible?

Sorry if this question appears to lack focus. I'm just kinda into the idea of owning a Mac Pro... only, I don't wanna drop two grand.

    Cheers,

    DH.

Increasing RAM or changing hard drives is trivial. Changing CPU can be done within certain restrictions which you can find by searching on the board here and needs some tools. GPU can be changed within a subset of Apple-approved cards or Windows cards can be obtained and flashed (again see the search tool). Beyond that, you are really up against a wall because the motherboard is proprietary as are the fans.

I'd suggest Craigslist and JUMP when you see a good price.

The Mac Pro in the link you provided is a first generation 2006 Mac Pro, not a 2008-2009ish model, they will sell for considerably more money.
