Hi all. My daughter’s birthday is this month and she wants her first iPhone. I don’t have any spares so I considered buying used. But then I thought, maybe it’d be better to get her a new phone for the 1 year warranty.

I’m considering two options:
iPhone 7 128gb for $650
iPhone 6S 128gb for $550

The difference is only $100 but my question is, do you think the 6S would last her 2 or more years? Or, if I’m seeking longevity, do I go 7? That’s really my only hang up. Thanks!

Like others have said, I would take a serious look at the SE. Very nice value for that price. If you are set on a 4.7” model, I would say the 7 is the better value even though it’s more expensive. Depending on how old your daughter is, the waterproofing on the 7 might come in handy!

I appreciate the quick replies. I don’t want to get her a 4” screen so the SE is not a consideration. A 4.7” screen will much better suit her needs.

Exactly!

Heck, it comes in handy for me, and I’m 43. :p

You're a nice guy.

My son's first phone was an 8GB iPhone 4s (which I have now)*. We upgraded him to my wife's old iPhone 5 in April. He turns 14 on the 24th so he's looking at either an SE or my old 6s+.

*He appreciated that I took the time to hunt down a 4s box (with 8GB on it and the iOS 6 picture), user manual, stickers, Apple earphones, charger and 30 pin cable.

Happy early Birthday to your daughter. I hope she absolutely loves the awesome gift of an iPhone from Dear Ole Dad.

The 6s is still a very capable device. I passed mine down to my father very recently, his 5s needed to go. As others have noted, the small difference in price (relatively speaking) going the route of the 7 gives you better longevity. The challenge will be that when her friends get new phones, she'll want one too lol.

Awesome gesture!

That is awesome I realize I’m going over the top but I’m fortunate to be in a position to do this for her and hope that it lasts her a good while. I won’t mention her age. I would get flamed on here like no other lol. But, I think she’ll get more use out of this than a bunch of toys that are still in the box unused weeks later. She’s set on necessities (clothes, books, etc).

I can't flame you too much.

My son got his first computer when he was five. There was a 3GS shared by him and my daughter for awhile and both of them have had computers for years.

However, I accredit the lack of requests for a phone to this particular thing. Neither of my kids had cause to ask for a phone or tablet when they had a computer all their own.

If your daughter is responsible enough for this then great and good job dad. Teaching your kid how to responsibly take care of and have respect for their stuff is good parenting.

Just throwing this out there but Apple sells the 6s 128gb phones refurbished for $469. You get a full year warranty with that.

ETA: They have the plus models going for $549.00

IPhone 7 is the best, you & your daughter wont regret it. 6S is getting slower now, processor speed plus the new software is making 6s slower. 7 will last for long time it has Quad-Core processor while 6s has dual-core processor.

iPhone 7 128GB, it will easily last till 2021. The extra $100 is worth it. Also consider getting AppleCare+, it will get you two additional years of warranty and also reduce the price of screen repairs or other kinds of physical damages. Alternatively, consider getting third party insurance to protect against accidental damage/theft/loss.

You might also want to check the Marketplace forum on here. Some of the available phones include Apple Care. I don't have a 7 to offer, only a 7+, but the prices might be worth it to you, and for used phones, you know the MR crowd take good care of what they've got.
