I'm the OP who pestered members with a bunch of questions about extending a network at my house and improving one at a small office. Both of those projects turned out well, and led me to (falsely) Believe that I could follow the advice of members about replacing my Arris TWC modem with a customer-owned one.

I've installed an Arris SB6190 and activated it with Spectrum. Everything at their end and on the modem shows that it's bringing internet into the house, but airport utility shows disconnected, and I'm getting the "WiFi has the self-assigned IP address/will not be able to connect to the Internet" notice. I've searched online for trouble-shooting tips and nothing has worked.

I'm using a Retina MacBook Pro with 10.11.6 and an AirPort Extreme Base Station,

Any help would be appreciated.

Tosh

I’m the guy who recommended the SB6190. The SB6190 only does bridging. The remainder is done by your router, assuming the AEBS.

I would first troubleshoot by rebooting the AEBS. If that fails, do you have the AEBS in routing mode? Do you have the SB6190 connected to the WAN port of the AEBS?

Uh . . . I've rebooted the AEBS multiple times. The SB6190 is connected to the Wan port. I didn't do anything to put the AEBS in the routing mode, and just looked at Airport Utility, which shows it as being in the Off (Bridge mode).

That’s your issue. Your AEBS needs to be in routing mode. The previous device from Spectrum was an all in one unit.
