Is there much difference between my current 24" iMac and the top of the range Mac Mini?

    iMac specs
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    2GB RAM
    320GB Hard drive
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
    Mac Mini specs
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    4GB RAM
    Dual 500GB hard drives
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics

I don't really need much power and I don't do any gaming so would there be much difference in speed between the two machines?

    Thank you very much.

Lets say they are the same spec, what is the advantage of selling the iMac for the mini?

    I wouldn't say so.

Just throw in 4GB of RAM and a larger HDD if you need to and you're set with the iMac.

Well then I could hook it up to my big TV which I use for my Xbox and save quite a lot of money.

    Saving money how?

So you would be using the TV as your monitor? still need a keyboard and mouse.

You are selling a used iMac and therefore going to MAYBE get 50% of what you paid for it new. That might be just about the cost of a brand new Mini.

Again I am not seeing the cost saving here. Maybe you can spell it out for me.

Can't you hook up your current iMac to your TV if that's your main concern?

A new mini server will cost you more than you will get for the iMac. Keep it and upgrade the RAM and add an external FW800 drive if you need more space.

Love my minis. They make a pretty good HTPC.

I got a 1TB FW drive and run with the stock mini drive. I plan to get a 1TB USB drive and use it with Time Machine for backup someday.

I just want to know if there will be a noticeable difference in speed?

The speed will be about the same.

I also fail to see where you are getting more money.

I cant see more than $800 for that 2.8, considering new 21" 3.33s have be showing up at the refurb store for $999 -- with a full 1 year warranty, 500 gig drive and 4 gigs ram, new wireless keyboard and magic mouse + snow leo and iLife 09.

The mini "server" you are looking at is $1000

Why not just hook up your current iMac to your TV?
