Debating selling my 2018 iPad Pro bundle (keyboard+pencil 2) for $900 to put towards the purchase of a new MacBook Pro.

I really don't use the iPad much, but each time I pick it up it's a great device to use and I fear I might miss it too much if I sold it!

Thoughts? I know the iPad can be a great companion device but I usually just wind up using my iPhone/Mac for most things anyway. I originally bought the iPad for textbook reading but I'm not in school anymore so I don't really need it for that now.

What are you using the iPad for right now? You mention using your Mac, is it a Macbook or a desktop? and which model?

I use the iPad Pro now for occasional couch web surfing, and it's a nice device to travel with (but haven't been traveling much lately).

I was going to pick up a new 13" MacBook Pro with 32GB RAM and a 10th gen i7 processor to play around with virtualization and set up my own virtual homelab. Looking at the 13" over the 16" for portability, I've been using a 2012 15" MacBook Pro for the past 8 years now and I think I want to downsize the laptop size and get an external monitor.

Keep the iPad and buy a MacBook Pro. I mainly use my iPhone for browsing and use my iPad for browsing in bed, watching YouTube while eating in the kitchen or when travelling.

It fills a nice niche between my iPhone and MacBook.

That’s exactly what I did — I sold my 2018 iPad Pro. I got $815 cash. I put it toward my MacBook Pro fund.

Any looking back? I mean, I can always get another iPad (cheap too) down the road if I really want another.
I like the iPad Pro and have the 2018 model with the new Magic Keyboard, but can totally understand your position. For what you describe, the base $329 model, or the base Air might suit your needs. It depends on how much you can sell your iPad Pro and keyboard for. I notice that with the Magic Keyboard, the iPad Pro seems a lot more useful. Of course, it’s another $300 and it is still limited by iPadOS.

Anyway, how many VMs do you plan to run at a time? If it’s just 1, then 16GB might well be enough. And the i5 is pretty good. That’s $600 savings (plus tax) if you stick with the base configuration. With VM usage, I’d prioritize RAM over the i7, so if it makes a difference, I’d go with the i5/32 over the i7 if you are worried 16GB won’t be enough RAM.

iPad Pro seems overkill, so selling it now is likely a good idea to get the most money out of it. You can always get the cheaper model iPad (the ones starting at $329) once you travel again if you miss it!

No, not really. For me, I just wasn’t using my iPad Pro enough. As soon as the new iPad Pro was announced, I knew it was the right time to sell it.
