Was running OS X 10.10.5. Deauthorized iTunes. Signed out of iCloud. Went to internet recovery, then erased Macintosh HD from disk utility. Then clicked reinstall Lion. It went through the download and then popped up an error saying it couldn't finish and that I should run the app again. I tried it twice more and still the same error. What did I do wrong(I thought I followed the instructions pretty well)?

Why Lion? It is not supported anymore. Why not sell it with a clean Yosemite installation..

(Yosemite is not mentioned, but the steps for Mavericks should be the same)

Thanks for the link. I read a few(obviously outdated)articles that said that the machine had to have the original OS X version installed before selling. Something about newer versions being "associated with your Apple ID". I realize now that was probably before the days of free upgrades. I now seem to be stuck in internet recovery. Restarting with command-r still brings it up. Am I screwed? As I still have internet access from the Utilities screen, can I go to Apple and get Yosemite from there? Any help would be great.

What is wrong with internet recovery? You should be able to do a fresh installation from there..
I will not be available the couple of hour, but have a look at Apple's guides:

Internet recovery only gives the option to reinstall Lion. I should have used regular recovery(command-r) first and just reinstalled Yosemite. But I used command-option-r instead, because I thought I had to reinstall Lion to sell my MBA. I can't get out of it.

Since the OS is now free, the new user can just buy his own license. I doubt anyone would chase after you from having installed a free OS.

The problem now is that I can't get ANY OS on it. Lion fails over and over and it gives me no other option. Both recovery AND internet recovery give the same options for Lion.

Can I use a Time Machine backup from another Mac and choose the restore option on the MBA?

The restore option from timemachine is first preset after the installation has finished, if I remember correctly.

If you have access to another Mac. Download Yosemite from App Store on it and make a usb-installer:

edit: looking at the screenshot here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 I might be wrong with timemachine and you give it a try.

Thanks for your help. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go the USB route as I'm not very familiar with the Terminal. I guess I'll give it a try.
