Hey folks, I often refer to other listings to see what others are asking for a used iMac...but I thought I'd ask you all to get an opinion on a fair asking price?

I'm selling my 2017 27" iMac 5K, I paid $2400 for it:
4.2GHz quad 7th gen i7
32GB DDR4 (originally came with 8GB)
512GB SSD
Radeon 575 with 4GB VRAM
Magic Mouse 2/Magic Keyboard...

Now...I'm a realist, I KNOW I won't get $2400 for it. I'm selling it to get a MacBook Pro - I need the portability. So I was thinking asking $2000 for it, starting. Thoughts? Appreciate any input (sarcastic or otherwise)

I have contemplated selling some of my older Macs before and found these guys to offer the most, they are also pretty local to me - I do NOT have any experience with them nor am I endorsing them - check for yourself what they are offering, gives you a datapoint

Thanks for the response, I’m not seeing a link in your post. If it’s anything close to what Apple offers, they quoted roughly $1400, which is lower than what I’d like...most places will undercut for the convenience.

Wow thanks, they give a quote of $1500 or $1640 (trade-in) so that tells me it wouldn’t be unrealistic to start at asking $2000 for mine. I really appreciate the input!

Maybe. That is quite a bit more ram than stock, and someone might be willing to pay for that. It's obviously not the stock ram, so they may be wary as to whether it will go bad. Memory warranties rarely transfer, but memory doesn't go bad that often. I looked up the model on macofalltrades. They sell them with stock ram for either $1879 or $1949 based on very good or excellent condition by whatever standards they use. $2000 is probably close to the high end of what you could get for it. I wouldn't personally offer that much if I was on the market for one, but I guess someone else might. It does leave you some room for haggling.

You didn't mention what sales channel you were planning on using. That will probably affect what you can get for it.

In my opinion, your best option would be a local sale via NextDoor classified or CraigsList, etc. That way the buyer can see the actual machine and carry it away without the nuisance and expense of shipping. I've had very good luck with NextDoor for used Apple products. But ONLY if they are priced appropriately. Also a BIG plus if you have the original box and all documentation, etc.

Given what you and others have said, I would suggest listing it at $1800. That should get you a quick and clean sale without haggling.

But, based on your comments, maybe you are the type that enjoys haggling and bargaining. Not my style, but some people seem to do it.

Somewhere
The internal SSD is attractive but you can get a brand new 2017 with the best stock CPU and GPU (a 8GB 580) offered from BH for like $1500 right now.

I'd say like $1700 is a realistic number. The ram is nice but really it's the internal SSD that will command a premium with your system.

Just to follow up with this, I ended up posting it on Facebook Marketplace for $2200 with some wiggle room to negotiate down. I was completely willing to take $1800 on the low end. I also expected to get the typical sarcastic and unnecessary comments from random people, of which I didn’t get any...but anyway... Sold it yesterday for $2100.

I guess the lesson here is always price stuff a little higher than you really want to get. I feel I didn’t take advantage of the buyer in any way. He showed up, we talked shop, knew exactly what he wanted...or at least he seemed like it. In the end, I’ve been able to pay off most of my 2019 MBP now. ?
