those "metal detectors" are probably not what you think ... they are likely for tracking stolen books

Libraries usually have very low crime rates ... mostly just non violent studying going on there

The EAS/anti-shoplifting things are on the exits. The library metal detects on entrance because the mayor has an office accessible from inside. There's a security guard there also to wand people.

No way. That's a total scam. Only deal with people who you can meet in person if it's CL. I get so many emails with so and so living in (fill in the blank) country or wanting to buy the item as a gift for their brother/sister. Total scam man. Be careful on CL and eBay for that matter. I wouldn't deal with PayPal on CL either, just my 2 cents.

So just because the guy is a chinaman he's natually a scammer?

How about you show a little respect to a fellow human being and sell this person your iPad.

listed my ipad on CL.
bounced 2-3 emails with this individual and here is their last email to me.
i'm not entertaining the idea of selling and shipping to china but do you think they are trying to scam me?
have no idea where they are from. no names have been exchanged. and out of the blue he wants it shipped.

"Hello ,
I really appreciate your response to my earlier mail. I will like to buy this item so pls do withdraw the advert from Craigslist. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via PayPal due to the distance . But am away for a business trip and because I'm new on Craigslist and i don't want to buy what isn't good will need you to get back to me with the total price you want to offer it including shipping cost to my kid in china. So all i need from you now is the total price including the shipping cost to china with your PayPal account so i can transfer the fund immediately. If you don't have account, you can set one up at www.paypal.com.
Lastly, will you guaranty me on buying it?
I hope to read from you soonest.

Thanks"

I got near the same email on a bike I was selling. Why would you even consider. Move on and look at your other offers. CL is made for selling locally and not to someone from China!!!!

When it comes to Craigslist, I only do hand to hand as almost all long distance ones are scam for me. Here is an example for a recent iPad I sold:

Buyer:
Do you still have it in a good condition because i want to buy it today.
Me:
Hello,

Yes I still have the iPad. It is in mint condition. I can meet with you at [cut out location]. Let me know if this works for you.
Buyer:
i would have come to meet you but due to the nature of my job that is while i said that you should send me your invoice paypal so i can do the payment.
thanks
Me:
Daniel,

As mentioned in the post. The transaction is cash only and in person only. If you cannot do this, then I cannot sell the iPad to you. Hopefully you will find someone who can do that.
Buyer:
i want to be ship to my son at USA.
and you will mail me your invoice paypal so i can do the payment.
thank and be fast.
Me:
You're an idiot.

No, no, no. This is clearly a scam. It is a stereotypical set up. Thinking about it at this level of detail simply proves that it still works (no offense).

None taken, but as I said, we ship overseas frequently. Many shipments that turn out to be legit start with unconventional initial communications.

A good example was a rather jumbled email from a customer in one country who wanted to purchase, but have the shipment sent to another country. Other elements of the proposed transaction raised flags. In short, it looked "scammy". Had we ignored that and simply moved on, we would have lost a good bit of money.

Instead, we did our research, arranged for prepayment, and shipped. A little work to establish an ongoing sales relationship.

That's my point, just proceed intelligently.

EBAY Seller Protection sucks, don't get scammed by people wanting to collect.

I just learned the hard way selling an iPad on ebay, I advertised that I'd be shipping it to winner and had a bidder outbid everyone then ask if he could collect instead, he paid via paypal just before he turned up to collect it, collected and 2 days later the payment was reversed as stolen credit card used, contacted paypal horrible company btw cold hearted - basically said no seller protection if you don't ship to a "Confirmed" Paypal address that's with everything i.e. bigger stuff too like a car, so yeah No seller protection if you don't send your sold item to the buyers confirmed Paypal address and if the buyer had turned up and paid in cash he can then turn around and tell Paypal he didn't pick it up and I'd have to give paypal the cash back, so forget allowing anyone to collect anything if you're using Ebay not safe, seriously avoid if you can but don't EVER allow anyone to collect.

You do this on Craigslist? I can understand it in other contexts, but CL really is for local transactions. Anything outside of that typically raises a giant red flag.

You also say "we ship," so I'm wondering if you have a somewhat more professional organization than just some guy wanting to sell his stuff. In this case you'd probably be better equipped to deal with scams, etc.

Anyway, I agree in that one just needs to act intelligently. :)

It is a scam plain and simple. CL tells you upfront do not ship anywhere; meet the seller in person. If you send an expensive piece of electronics to China, it's gone and you have zero chance of getting the money or geting the electronics back.

The "ship to" is absolutely the most common scam on CL; don't even think about it.

Craigslist? No, we're the old school type - receive orders via our ecommerce site, or via purchase orders emailed/faxed, etc.

You make a good point though, regarding a one off sale vs a biz entity processing the latest of many...

think abut this. he is in china, what is he doing searching posts in your particular city? that should be red flag right there.
