1) Sell to U.S. customers only

4) Get tracking and signature from owner upon delivery

5) Take video and pictures as you place iPhone into shipping box to show it is not broken

Anything else? I’ve heard something about “clean esn” but not sure what that means

Trying not to get ripped off

Try staying away from eBay. Use swappa.com for what it's worth. Clean esn basically means the phone hasn't been blacklisted, i.e. reported stolen for example.

I don’t trust swappa. I’ve seen international users on there a lot and have had sketchy people try to buy. With charter.net email addresses and what not

I wouldn’t risk it with eBay, too easy to get scammed. I only sell my old devices for cash on collection. That way, the buyer has to meet me and confirm they’re happy with the device.

How do you meet them in person? I'm afraid I'll get robbed or worse

And I don't know what else to do.

Meeting in person carries risks that would NOT be worth any amount of money.

My experience on Swappa has been sketch

I have a 1000 phone sitting around losing value everyday.

Rather try eBay than nothing at all

Meet at a bank, meet at a police station. Bring a friend with you.

Aren't charter.net email addresses more trustworthy because it means the e-mail provider knows exactly where a responsible party lives? Versus gmail where anybody can sign up for one or multiple addresses with a fake name and over a VPN or public Wi-Fi?

When meeting a prospective buyer, I bring Cookie Monster with me. Most people are afraid of monsters and are less likely to try anything with one around.

Hehe or I could bring a Chuckie doll hehehe

Yeah but whoever uses them!?!?!

I understand OP's concerns about selling online. Personally, when it comes to selling phones or computers, I rely upon selling to local friends/family etc. This reduces the risk a lot. If you are involved in a local social group (church, social club, school, etc.) then use those contacts to let folks know you have device to sell.

Swappa is WAY more trustworthy than eBay. Do you own research, don’t just take my word for it. I buy and sell there constantly. As a seller, you only ship to PayPal approved addresses, not to mention they verify the ESN of every phone before the ad gets published. So there’s that. Still don’t believe me, see the countless threads on here about swappa v/s eBay. Again, it’s your decision, so good luck with whatever you decide.

I've read online stories of how people come back after SIX MONTHS (6!) and say there's something wrong with the phone. The guy sold it on Swappa.

Um no. I can tell you that’s not how it works. Once the phone has been delivered, the buyer has to complete the sale within a reasonable timeframe, usually a couple of days, or file a dispute. SIX MONTHS later, nope. So that’s incorrect. Again, good luck in your endeavors.

Iv'e sold a mini 5 and AirPods on ebay in the last few weeks with no problems. And a old iPad and iPhone on gumtree also with no problems.

Also keep in mind that you will get a 1099-k from eBay. Between eBay's cut and the taxes, you're almost better off trading it in.

Personally when I sell a phone or other electronics I just use Craigslist, local exchange in a safe location, cash only.

They said that PayPal lets them and basically it's in PayPals hands? That's why the 6 months

Have them come to your home. We do this all the time and we’ve never had any issues. I’m from the UK, and use Gumtree to advertise my old phones (not sure what the US equivalent is? Swappa?).

That’s why you sell for cash on collection. It’s harder for them to nab the money back from you if they’ve physically handed over cash, and if they do have issues they’d have to meet you to explain/show you.

Exactly this! When I used to have the time or energy to deal with randoms, I used to do the same. Gumtree is good that way.

My city has a couple public places were you can go and do a transaction that is monitored by the police with cameras and can be there in a heart beat. Very safe for sellers and buyers ...

I use gumtree also. Swappa for u.s users does sound a more reassuring platform and I’d like to have something similar here in uk. Gumtree is fine but is still wide open to scammers/fraud if someone wasn’t familiar with it. That said, I have used gumtree on several occasions but only advertise my stuff as local sales (no shipping/postage) and always have the buyer collect from my home. If I buy anything from gumtree I will similarly pick it up from the sellers home. You can tell a lot from sellers who insist in collection from their home & gives some piece of mind to potential buyers. I always complete the sale with a handshake and a reassuring “If there’s any issues whatsoever, you know where I am” although I’ve never had anyone return anything to me

Exactly because if something happens 6 months later, it’s all on them. Accidental damage or just a hardware defect. Doesn’t matter. But PayPal is known with siding with the buyer, which is so wrong. PayPal is incredibly flawed so I choose to not to business with them anymore. I got ****ed over several months ago and customer got the phone AND money. Never again. I’d rather sell elsewhere... but still not eBay.

I made the mistake of not adding signature confirmation so the buyer had the ability to say they never got it... and did just that. Now I add signature confirmation to everything.

I have used Swappa to buy and sell. Ebay just seems sketchy these days.

I have only had one issue with Swappa. I bought an Ipad Air on Swappa recently...paid....and the seller dropped off the face of the earth. Didn't respond to any messages and Swappa told me to file a claim with PayPay. I filed a claim with PayPal, and the guy didn't respond there either. It was the strangest thing. He didn't attempt to say he shipped it and I'm lying. The guy just disappeared. I thought I was going to be out the money I sent, but PayPal came back and refunded my money after the guy didn't respond within the time frame given. The annoying part was just waiting the 2-3 weeks until the investigation was over to get my money back. I'm convinced the guy died. He just fell off the face of the earth..didn't even try to win the claim. Didn't answer any emails or messages. Strange

If he did pass away, I hope he rests in peace with God.

You're right, been there my friend, signature confirmation is a must. And yeah, 6 months later, well anyway...
