I’ve bought and sold on swappa. Great experience both ways.

I also reference swappa for current market reselling prices for Apple devices.

Thanks everyone. I have the phone for sale on Swappa, eBay and CL at the moment. Although I have had nothing but problems selling phones on ebay of recent, I will give it a shot. A legitimate international buyer is will to pay more and eBay helps with the shipping and logistics. iPhones cost a crapload more in the UK/Europe. Craig's list is appealing because of the lack of fees and hopefully a nice cash meetup. I have bought phones on CL for my kids to take overseas to study abroad, so I figured why not give it a shot selling.

Personally, I am hoping Swappa works out.I have turned down legitimate offers of $525 and $540.

offering more than asked and requesting to "arrange a pickup with my courier". I can only imagine all the random **** they have coming in to wherever they operate from.

They don’t ever get the stuff. The scam works like this... they offer to buy it from you and arrange for the courier to pick it up, then they send you a check (or a paypal transfer) for a few hundred dollars more than the item cost and ask you to transfer the extra money to their courier (because for some very flakey reason they can’t pay the courier themselves). So you cash the check and send out the extra money only to discover that the check is bad and you are out the money that you transferred to the “courier”

I have gotten two offers for my 7 that are $100 over asking ($650) with the people asking me for my paypal info and to ship it to them because they can't meetup. I told the first person meetup and cash only.

Seems like a scam? Any words of caution/advice?

Stay away from CL. If you must use it, only do the deal in cash never ever ship a phone.

Thank you, this is what I thought. I didn't think of the Paypal never received it scam. I may just take it down from CL. The spam and scam emails are annoying.

Something else for the future, once you have been up forum member for six months and you have over 250 posts, you are able to sell on the marketplace forum on Macrumors. There a lot of honest buyers on here as well.

Yes, I asked about that recently when I upgraded my memory and wanted to sell the relatively new 16GB here to a fellow member. I was informed about the 6 month rule. That's too bad.

My phone sold on Swappa today for asking $550.

Definitely a scam. Do NOT do PayPal.

The buyer will cry fraud to PayPal after you ship the item and get their money back, leaving you with $0 and an iPhone that just disappeared into oblivion.

In person and cash only is my personal no-matter-what rule.

I always sold my old phones to my co-workers. I just put up an ad in the staff room, and someone always wants it for their kid.
The only downside to this is, I'm the first person they call if they need help with it lol!

May I know how you paid Citizen's? Did they immediately close the loan upon payment?

SCAM ALERT, SCAM ALERT. The first thing craigslist scammers do is offer more money than you're asking. True craigslisters NEVER offer more and almost always offer less.

And why would they when they can buy an IP7 on eBay for less than $650. You would be lucky to get $650 for an IP7 on eBay.

I don't know if I am the exception to the rule, but I do. (Not for cell phones.) I collect a particular amusement park's memorabilia. I can find some great stuff on CL in the area that the park is, problem is I live over 3 hours away. I offer to pay shipping plus a little more to cover the Paypal fee and time & trouble. There are honest people still out there...but I readily admit it's getting harder to find them. (sigh)

How does swappa work? I don’t want to do PayPal. I just want to meet someone in person.

Another good meet up location for CL is at a bank.
I request to meet indoors in the lobby. There's tons of security, video, and guards, and I can deposit the cash right away to confirm it's legit.

(I'm also armed but that's because I'm a in a state that respects my rights). :) /taking cover

Seriously, consider a bank lobby.

In terms of the PayPal scam, can’t someone on Swappa do the same? Saying they never got it and get a refund and a phone?

I plan to ship with tracking.

If they’re not willing to meet at a public place, say the police station to see how they react, and Pay in cash then ignore them completely.

I’ve gone as far as cashing a check from a person like this only to have my bank call me a few minutes later to confirm the sender was a scammer.

never sell only cash and if you have $100 bill meet in a bank and let them check the money that what I did too

This is the most common scam on CL.

Do cash only in a public place.

I always meet buyers from Craigslist in my bank lobby. Works for all the reasons you state.

How much did you get for yours? Was thinking if my IP7+ on there or Craigslist

Hey, I didn't sell my 7+ yet as I'm still undecided if/when I'm upgrading, and also to which phone. But one of the things I like about Swappa is that you can see what phones have recently sold for to give you an idea of what you may be able to get.

I had a CL buyer want to use PayPal for me and he was offering over the amount I asked. I said sure send me the money and I’ll ship the item. Well he said he sent it but it was not in my account. Then I got an email that “looked” 99% legitimately from PayPal but it was spoofed, nothing in my account.
Unless someone is willing to meet in person in a well lit and safe place and use cash, you risk losing as the seller.

Once I actually bought a Mac mini from someone and met them at the Apple store to have it checked out.

I've heard good things about Swappa but want to also give a vote to Facebook Marketplace....basically craigslist but much easier to tell a scammer. I've had multiple pleasant exchanges with people for some chairs I sold on there (only 1 scam out of like 8 people who were interested)

As others have said, definitely a SCAM. However, I like selling on CL because I can get a good return. I only ever meet in the food court at my local mall, or in the apple store. And always cash.
