I'm selling my 6-core 3.33 Ghz 5,1 Mac Pro. I currently have a Nvidia GTX 980 Ti SuperClocked in it powered by an external PSU.

I am wanting to keep the GTX 980 and put something else in the Mac Pro that "just works" with no external PSU and hopefully something that does require a driver update every time there's an OS update.

Other than the original AMD Mac cards, is there anything I can get relatively inexpensively that would "just work"?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sure, anything Nvidia prior to the Maxwell chip. The GTX 680 or GTX 780 would be fine, but no boot screen unless flashed. They both will work off Apple drivers. I have an MVC flashed GTX 780 (Gigabyte 3 fan model) I could let go. I also have a flashed GTX 570 (also a Gigabyte 3 fan model) that would be even cheaper. That has not been used in quite some time.

GTX 680 or HD 7950

These 2 work 100% OOTB. And can easily flash with Mac EFI ROM. Even though you are selling it, but make it a "proper" Mac, may be easier to sell, or ask for higher price, or less trouble after transaction.

Thanks for the response. I'm in Canada, so I have to look at things like shipping and whether after the purchase of the card and the shipping rate it is still economical for me to follow through on.

I'll look into the cards a bit further. Thanks again for your help.

That's interesting. Thanks for the information. I'll look into flashing and how much the old GTX 980s are going for these days.

^^^^Again, GTX 980 (Maxwell) will not run on Apple drivers. You or the new owner would need to download Nvidia drivers, something you said you didn't want.

since you are selling your unit, get a
nvidia gt 120
works hassle free, does not cost that much.

+1 To this. GT 120 just works and is the graphics card that shipped with the 2009 4,1 Mac Pro. I can't really recommend the 5770 (card that shipped with the 2010 5,1) because of the crazy price the Mac flashed ones command. If you go with a flashed 680 or 7950 you can find for cheap, you may be able to raise the price up significantly due to the better graphics. Unfortunately the Mac flashed 680's and 7950's still go for pretty high prices as well

A Mac flashed GTX 680. No question.
You'd be hobbling the cMP if you went with a GT 120 IMO.
This is a high end cMP, a 680 would be much better suited to it and likely command a higher price.
