I got pwned selling a laptop on eBay.

Several days later I get a brick in a box delivered to my door.
Buyer initiates chargeback
I dispute with all information.
Paypal credits the buyer full priced based completely on the fact they had verified tracking info that a package was delivered from them to me.

Paypal could give a rats behind about the seller, they refused to respond to a single complaint and closed the case as resolved. I was out a laptop.

I've sold many since on CL. Met a few strange people but also some really good ones.

surely they cant do this... take this further... civil litigation vs crimunal

A stolen account doesn't ship to the verified and registered address on paypal. If you send to another address that is not verified, you are not protected. Shipping it with insurance, signature required, and to the verified address leaves almost no possible way to be scammed out of your paypal money.

Again, not true. If a scammer has someone's login, they can easily change the address on file. Then when owner sees the charge, Paypal will see the recent address change and immediately recover funds. Which will almost always happen prior to a check being sent out or a back transfer completing. Just because you see the money cleared into your Paypal balance does not mean it's untouchable and yours forever.

If your going to use craigslist, take cash only and meet somewhere safe.

I hope the OP didn't fall for the scam. Dont do it man, even if they send the money to you first, paypal can always chargeback.

If the "buyer" sends money via Western Union, there is no way the "buyer" can get the money back. However, no scammer is stupid enough to send money via Western Union since they know full well once you give the money to Western Union you cannot get it back.

I don't see how that's not true. A verified address needs to be the billing address on the credit card

"How a Buyer Can Confirm an Address
Inform your buyer on how to confirm his or her address, by communicating the following options:
Add a credit card to your PayPal account. PayPal will confirm the credit card billing address (i.e., the address where you receive your credit card statement)."

Unless the stolen card has its billing address changed, I don't see how a thief can so easily change the address.

^^
the person who tried to scam me last wk end, had verified paypal.. despite that address showing up as nothing more than a filed on google maps!

I also have the usual safeguards on my account, like block buyers with strike, block ppl with no paypal and block liters without verified address..

it appears the scammers where not amateurs as they even forged e-mails to me trying to dupe me into thinking payment had been made

They could of possibly taken out a creditcard online, used it, then coupled it to a paypal account, before they then went on to make several high profile and costly bids

Paypal and ebay where very interested in this case.. but where not prepared to give further details or share info when i asked re specific details.. which i suppose is fair enough

There's no denying that there are very talented scammers out there who can find the smallest of loopholes. With that being said, millions of people use paypal and, yes, you can be scammed; however, if you take the likely precautions and play it smart with feedback from ebay, you will more than likely be OK. People on here make it seem like paypal is the oldwest where your goods are as good as stolen once it leaves your hand.

Whenever I sell anything like this on fleaBay I never accept returns.

that may make you feel good when you are putting up the item for sale, but if you use paypal it is no guarantee. buyer could file a snad and he'd win. so the returns accepted thing means absolutely nothing.

Dont do it! its a scam!

He'll paypal you the money, you'll ship it to him, he'll say he never got it and open a claim with paypal and they'll refund him the money.

DONT DO IT!

Very true. Regardless of what your ebay sale says, it's irrelevant to the terms and conditions that paypal applies. Even if your page says "absolutely no returns", you do not have the power to make such claims according to the ToS of ebay/paypal.

Definitely never use PP when using craigs.

It's pretty easy to make yourself safe from people who steal other people's PayPal accounts. First, only ship to PayPal confirmed addresses.

Second, if the buyer seems sketchy just wait a few days before shipping it out. Chances are good within 3 days a stolen PayPal account will have already submitted a claim.

Third, if they try to tell you about PayPal as if you didn't know what it was: they're a scammer.

I never ship to unconfirmed addresses. You can contact Paypal as well to confirm if an address is confirmed. I remember back in the day, you would have to call paypal via a LAN line to get verified. Now it is through small deposits/withdrawals on ones' bank account.

TO the guy who got hosed on a laptop, did you have signature confirmation? I won a case against some dirt bag buyer. It was over some XBOX 360 controller, lol. Guy said he never got it. I emailed paypal that I am pissed because I have been here 10 years w/ no problems ever, and this dirt bag just signed up for ebay a few weeks prior and already has problems.

They asked me to fax/email a copy of the USPS receipt. Now I get DC ON ALL my sales, and insurance/signature confirmation on certain items.

Perhaps I am lucky, but I have 340+ 100% feedback (with like 40 feedback waiting to be left back for me) and really haven't had any problems. I have sold stuff over $1000 on there, but not anything super expensive.

Ebay > Craigslist w/ police protection
That's how safe Ebay is. Craigslist is just outrageously dangerous.

I sold an item on ebay. Sent him the item and got the paypal money. 9 months later a package arrived from him. Empty box. Then he did a chargeback and paypal took the money out of my account. Nothing I could do. BEWARE!

they can't take the money out of your bank account, but they can put a negative balance on your paypal and make you responsible for that. can make it to collections also.

Are you sure - they could reverse a payment, if I recall the TOS correctly. Alternatively, they could initiate a transfer from your account in the amount due.

So I have a potential buyer. Emails went as such:

Still available for Sale??

Me: Yep!

Him: Thanks for the email..I will be shipping the macbook to the address below and am also paying you through paypal this is very secure, fastest and relaible way of making payment..am making an offer all total am paying now $2350 including shipping cost...Please i will like you to get back to me with your paypal email address so i can make instant payment..And if you dont have kindly log on to this link to create an account( www.paypal.com) ...My address is : (HE PUT HIS ADDRESS HERE).

His address is located in Stevensville, Montana and my listing is in California..

Anyhow,

Me: Will you paypal the money first?

Him: Okay i will...kindly send me your paypal email so i can make the payment instantly.

So now here I am, unsure on what to do.. If I show a payment in my PayPal for $2250, is that it, I just got paid? No loopholes or anything he can pull once that happens?
NO DON'T DO IT...SAME THING HAPPEND WITH ME...just meet in person get the cash.

Paypal is officially a bunch of incompetent ****ing idiots!

I don't recommend you to use paypal this is a fraudulent company they don't care about you.

Last month I have lost $1900 in a transaction with paypal.

Always use secure payments like western union, moneygram, wire transfer/bank transfer, all of tease are 10000000 times better than paypal (+ you don't have to pay the paypal huge fees)

Lots of good points here and hopefully we've all learned that the only way to deal with Craigslist is with cash.

Another point I wanted to make is that if the scammer is a really sophisticated one, the PayPal link he provides could redirect you to a fraudulent PayPal website, where he'll have lots of your personal information with which to commit ID theft. Never, ever click on a link provided by someone else that has you enter personal information and/or verify log in details.

Craigslist is a good place to deal AS long as your dealing in person. Although people are usually looking for a bargain and not what the product is actually worth. Im not sure why anyone would ever think about shipping their item to a person they have never met before. For the person who got screwed through eBay, iv had nothing but good things with eBay im sorry to hear that man.

but just like he said there he was with his son. he was an old man just looking for an iphone. transaction went very smooth.

But because of scumbag scammers like the people you guys are talking about in this thread we have to be super careful of any type of weird request/email.

Cool story....

I think someone already said this, but I'm saying it again for emphasis:

Paypal on Craigslist is ALWAYS A SCAM. So is nearly every email asking you to ship it for any reason. Also, nearly any email that simply states, "is the item still for sale?" is usually a bait for a scam as well. If you are going to sell on Craigslist, deal in cash only and local pickup in a public location, such as a mall or outside a well-lit store. Make sure they get out of their car. Some of these details might not apply to your transaction, but are good rules of thumb anyways for other future sales.
