(I labeled this thread "semi-OT" because, even though it is related to digital video, it is not Mac-specific.)
I'm looking for a technical reference (or even a textbook) on the main container formats out there (MOV, MP4, AVI, Ogg, etc.), preferably one that may shed some insight into the design ideas behind each format.
I stress that I'm looking for something like a book (or a lengthy review in a technical journal or magazine). I've found (and read) much stuff on this subject on the web, but is usually very superficial (aimed at the layperson who just wants to get something to work) and/or centered around only one of the formats (e.g. AVI), as if it were the only one out there.
My hope is that a lengthy technical treatise (e.g. a handbook or a textbook), aimed at programmers and developers, will offer more insight into how the various container formats compare with each other, and the design considerations that shaped them, while at the same time giving enough technical background on each of them to make this comparison meaningful.
Bottomline, my aim here is a deeper understanding than what I've managed to get from reading webpages!
Many thanks in advance,
kj
P.S. Can someone recommend a developers' forum (preferably OS X-oriented) for the budding video developer?
