Isn't Googles "good reason" they invented RCS and their messaging strategy sucks. That last part is an opinion but I am pretty sure it is their invention and that should be said when writing an article about their being champions for it. It's like an article about how apple is pushing lightning without saying they invented it.

Google did not invent RCS, they bought into the standard and worked on it when no one else would.

What is your definition for a "private communication"? I don't think in my whole life so far that I've sent a text that I cared where someone else saw it or not. Are you using your phone for illicit activities? I mean, it's nice that an iMessage is end-to-end encrypted, but I wouldn't care if it wasn't. My texts are just grains of sand on an endless beach.
Sure but imagine that other people....do send private information they dont want public. Just imagine that.

It'd be nice to be able to use the "Send Later" option with non-iPhone users. Hopefully this will be implemented soon.

Glad to see that RCS support is now finally available on iPhones. However carrier support is also required. Here in India, carrier support for RCS has not yet been enabled. Hopefully it will happen in the near future.

Facebook Messenger? I would much rather that Google see my photos and messages than Meta.
I never send anything important via Facebook Messenger, not that i really have much that is important to send anyway. Any documents i send via email

Why all the moaning? RCS is a no-brainer. We should all get behind it if it makes messaging across networks and devices more secure and improves functionality. The challenge is these big, bloated network providers... Vodafone UK, 02 UK.. these guys have stopped innovating, no development in network functionality.. and when it comes to device lead services.. they are slow to implement. RCS is a prime example. It's not rocket science, yet it's unavailable to UK iPhone owners. Excuses.. misinformation
But there is a standard messaging service and have been for years, it is called SMS. I can send an SMS to any phone, including the non-smart phone a mate uses. i know that a non-smart phone or one that can't cope with RCS should rip out all the rubbish, but sometimes it don't, as my mate would tell me. He has had a few messages via people using RCS that his phone will not accept.
Also, how long will it be before we get companies using RCS to send advertisements to us? I get SMS from my bank and my mobile phone company and a couple of other companies I use. Being SMS it is just text, if they start using RCS, i would all sort of rubbish sent.
No thank you, I will stay with SMS, it does what it says on the tin.

Same reason people buy Android device, probably
A lot of people buy android devices because most of them are not overpriced. sure, you do get those who feel the need to spend silly amounts on a phone, even Android ones, and you get people who think that having an Iphone or a Samsung phone is a status symbol.

I and most of my close friends and family just buy a pretty low cost phone, below a couple of hundred quid, because it does the job and sometimes very well indeed.
My Oppo was £140 and is 4 months off 4 years old, it takes good photos and videos. With vertical video being the nrom these days for people, I don't think any cares anyway about quality.

Sms is allso mot encryptes as far as I know (ok appart from the first and last hop (Ie between sender phone and base station, and between the base station the recivers device is connected to and their phone)) there might be other encryption involved in other stages of the chain but no guaranties and no E2EE

Only Google version of RCS is encrypted, so if your network provider uses their own version, it may not be encrypted. Anyway, who sends data via these services that are that sensitive? I know SMS used to be used for two strep verification, that is getting less these days with authentication apps

If i need to tell somone something that is imporytant, I will phone them, meet them in person, or send via email.

End to end encryption may be banned in the U.K at some point, and I think the E.u as well as it is used by criminals.
Myself I still rather take the chance with SMS,

i have no interest in the rubbish extras that RCS offers.

Use Signal. It Just Works on every platform and device.
Yet like all the other chat apps is not standards compliant. Had even less Doppler across devices like hands free kits, cars etc because of that.

Too many don’t seem to understand that SMS and RCS by extension is part of critical infrastructure and works under almost any circumstance. Especially in emergencies and even when there is no credit on a phone.

Keep in mind that in some places "illicit activities" includes criticizing the head of state, being a woman who doesn't want to wear a hijab, loving someone of the same gender, or wishing for democracy.

But like the other services, people have to be using it. I don't think I know anyone who uses Signal, I know loads that use Whatsapp, something I refuse to use.
SMS again is something that everyone has on their phone, even a basic non-smart phone.

RCS doesn't work on my Android phone :D
so many reasons why... each carrier can chose to or not support it.
then they set the file limits and compression settings.

it's not the be all and end all of messaging large files.

and then you get people who think they want it and blame Apple because it isnt showing up as an option... :)

thing is SMS is useful in emergencies with short messages targeting usually alerts and safety messages.

somehow i doubt sending a 2gig video is something considered an emergency necessity...
