I expect the proximity sensor to be fixed by 4.0 branch (e.g. in version 4.0.2). Version 4.1 is for maturing Game Center, and may be in beta for some time longer yet.

That is sensible and reassuring, because you'd expect the issue to be fixed in a bugfix release. If it's in 4.0.2 that would explain why 4.1b2 seems not to fix it.

Has anyone contacted Apple in the last day or two to see if they are offering any updates on this issue?

They promised the fix this week, but something tells me there is no proximity sensor fix coming for weeks if ever. They also promised White iPhones by last week and we know how that promise went.

For what it's worth, I think Apple Retail and Apple Care staff rarely have access to genuine schedule information.

The proximity sensor issue is at it's heart a HARWARE issue. That is why it's a problem on the 4 and not the 3GS. Software may be able to dampen the problem of defective hardware/design, but it won't, and can't, solve the problem entirerly.

It is the main reason I returned my 4. I will wait till Apple can prove to me they have fixed the problem. I'm leaning towards manufacturing defect on this one though as it appears people have been able to fix this problem by getting replacement iPhones.

They told me by the end of July a fix was coming for the bluetooth and other issues. This was July 15th or so:rolleyes:

I'm not one to complain about the antenna issue, which I think is overblown. We can debate that in another thread I suppose. But I am very dissatisfied about the proximity sensor issue. If they don't make good on the expectation their support dudes have set and deliver a fix shortly, I shall begin visiting my local Apple store for replacement hardware daily until I find a model that isn't affected. I'm prepared to do this until they either provide a permanent fix or refund my purchase price and restore my AT&T upgrade eligibility (even though I am outside my 30 days).

Apple has said "take it or leave it" on the antenna issue (which is their right), but they're not taking that position on this problem, they're acknowledging the issue and promising a fix. Apple must keep this promise, and fast.

But I must calm down. They'll fix it. Within another week or so. Right?

iOS 4.1 Beta 3 was just released a few minutes ago to developers so the 4.1 final release will be out very soon! I think less than 2 weeks and 4.1 is suppose to fix any proximity issues.

Looking at the release notes published on another site, the release still has a lot of things missing or broken.

If they are planning on putting Game Center out in 4.1 (probably not) they'll really have to do a lot.

That's not to say that 4.0.2 isn't coming sooner with a fix for the sensor problem.

I took zub3qin's signature to heart and called Apple. The first level person spent some time looking for a tech note, wasn't happy with what she found, put me on hold for awhile, then put me in touch with a "senior advisor" who didn't mention 4.1 specifically but acknowledged that Apple knows about the issue and is working on it. He volunteered that he has had 3-4 calls today about the proximity issue and none about the antenna issue. He reassured me that regardless of whether a hardware or a software fix is required (I am personally confident a software fix will be devised), Apple is taking full responsibility for the issue and is working hard to fix it.

Then he gave me his personal apple.com e-mail address and asked me to contact him directly if I didn't see a fix within three weeks. He was careful to say he has no idea when exactly the fix is coming, other than "very soon."
I just emailed my contact at apple.

Hi ___--

On 7/23 you and I spoke after I called 800-MY-IPHONE with an iPhone 4 proximity sensor issue. (Serial # 85026____.) During our conversation you expressed the opinion that a software fix would be available within three weeks and asked me to contact you directly if not.

It has been nearly three weeks, and while I completely understand that you were not promising a fix by this time, I am starting to become impatient since it seems that hardware replacements are not available as a solution to the problem. Additionally, I have read that iOS 4.1b3 has not fixed it either.

Can you please update me on the status of this issue?

Thanks for your candor during our conversation, and for your willingness to be contacted directly about this!

Will post when I hear back.

It's in your head. You just never looked before. I received mine on launch day, and can clearly see it in direct light.

The proximity censor is the only issue I have with my iPhone 4. It's annoying as hell, but the bumper helps with not touching the buttons during calls. I'm hoping for a software fix SOON!

I got mine on July 16th and there is no visible sensor...and I don't have any problems with the proximity sensor either...

i asked about the sensor issue while getting my # ported back to at&t this past saturday (8/7). he said there was a fix coming in the next few weeks.

No one knows for sure ... anyone can guess "in a few weeks", but no one has any concrete details. My guess is we'll see it around Sept-Oct, like when 3.1 was released.

No response, boooooo

He responded to a followup I sent his morning.

There are still no updates on the issue. I'm sorry. I am not aware of any info about the beta versions as there is a non disclosure agreement.

Regards,

Meanwhile Appleinsider has reassuring news today about the latest 4.1 beta. No documented fix but reports of improvements.

who thinks 4.1 will be released after the sep keynote like last year. im thinking this because of the new facetime through email feature and apple being apple wouldnt release it before they had their new devices which will use it for sale.
