You rarely hear about any improvements in the actual sensors on the AW themselves. We hear about the screen improvements, the processor improvements, the workout improvements, etc. But I can't recall hearing that the heart/EKG sensors have been improved. I know there are 1 lead sensors that can detect premature contractions, etc. So I wondering if the later series have improved sensors and can do more that detect AFib. Thanks in advance.

I think there might be change in versions when look on EKG graph - here from AW8:

Could you or someone else using previous AW tell difference?

Thanks, I had no idea this info even existed. Mine says Watch 4, Software version 9.2, Feature version 2 and Update version 2.20S361

Looks like no difference, at least in these numbers, from the series 4 to the series 6.

No, the electrical heart sensor hasn’t received an hardware update yet as far as we know. Only updated sensor in Apple Watch is the optical heart sensor which is 3rd gen currently. All the other sensors are 1st gen.

One thing I do remember reading about (and I don't know is if this was hardware or software) but it can actually take a reading when your bpm is over 100 (?) when before it would just say it was too high to do so.

It is one of my main petpeves with AW, they add a sensor which does not get replaced for a better/more accurate model instead they tweak the software algo`s.

Honestly pretty **** they keep focusing on very marginal stuff over and over.
I want the best and most accurate latest generation sensors. EGC etc is unchanged since the AW4, it the same stuff 4 years later, hearth rate monitoring has not been significantly improved since the AW0 8 years later, it is not much more accurate or anything.

So, sleeping detection is improved in S8 vs S7 and previous.

About heart rate during sports, for instance there is cycling - it’s a bit worse on S8 than S7 but way better than previous.

About SpO2 (Edit: S8 is not here, but it’s close or better than S7)

At least based on same tests of one YouTube I admire :p

All about S8:

SpO2 in example of Garmin:

Likely a physical watch setup does allow for more than 1 lead and the current sensor is not the limiting factor. I would be more interested in a physical setup to use without using both arm, so it could work as a replacement for the optical sensor during workout and during the day/night.
