Another wish or two...

In addition to the Beatles, I'd like to find out that the tiff with NBC has been settled, and we'll be able to get their shows through iTMS again.

Exciting new releases and announcements really should take place on Mondays. This would make the world happier about facing their work week instead of having a 'case of the Mondays'.

"iTunes 8 Accidentally Leaked"
When the page loaded I immediately noticed that the download button was out of place. I didn’t think anything of it as this happens in Opera quite often. I hovered over it for a few seconds and noticed that the URL was something about iTunes 8.0. I When the d/l finished I started the install process and sure enough, the splash screen read Itunes 8

Don't know if it's coincidence but Digg went down about 5 minutes after that was posted so I can't see a link or anything, just that synopsis of the story.

To much negativity!

iPod Touch can't have GPS because it doesn't have the HARDWARE needed to send and receive the signal. The next iPod Touch might, but I hope not because then it just keeps eliminating the reasons I spent the extra money to get the iPhone.
That is close to an irrational statement. Things change and hardware gets reconfigured usually for the better. What you where willing to spend money on this year should have no bearing on how you percieve Apples products 3 or 6 months down the calendar. Apple has little choice but to improve each and every one of it's products otherwise the competition will do it for Apple. Frankly GPS in a new Touch would be ideal.

While I believe that Apple will deliver new hardware with GPS I don't see it going into all Touch models. That simply because I belive they want to deliver low end Touch hardware. Low end however doesn't mean there won't be a family of devices that at some point adds BluTooth, GPS and what have you.

In any event the smart reason to go with IPhone over Touch is simply this -->3G<-- ! From the standpoint of value it really makes iPhone worthwhile.

C+P would be nice, but I really never had a huge reason for it. Yes it would have been handy a bunch of times, but I want MMS more.

I am REALLY REALLY hoping for something like simplify media, but made by apple. I can finally get rid of the iPhone play list I have.

I have no idea what you are talking about here!

As for MMS I doubt that will ever happen. I don't think Apple wants to get into that mess and frankly I'm not convinced that AT&T want to support it any longer than it has to. There are just to many other way to transmit such data on a micro computer that I don't see any value for the average user.

As to copy & past well it would be interesting to see how that gets implemented. The biggest problem I generally have is getting contact info from other apps into the contacts list. If Apple came up with a smart way to do that the would be off to a good start.

What I really want to see is an app or feature that allows disk mode access. By that I mean a finder like app that can be used to rummage through stored documents and open them with the right app. I've mentioned this before but the ability to carry certain documents with you, in common formats like PDF, HTML and the like, would be extremely useful. In essence I want an app that gives me finder like access to documents.

There's several simple improvements Apple needs to make to the iPhone OS - or at least as a former Win Moblile 5 user, that I would like to see:

5. Ability to disable the spell checker or set it to replace the world only when selected, instead of automatic replacement. It's a PIA to type unusual names or abbreviations then have the stupid spell checker replace them while your trying to type. Also the transmission indicator for SMS is unnecessary - I'd rather be able to go to another message and start typing. Also the ability to have multiple conversations going at the same time would be nice - using tabs. Having to exit one individuals conversation and enter anothers is so gauche...

That would be a good start - IMHO.

I would love to see this...I HATE the spell checker when I'm on websites and logging in.

I want stability. Enough features already.

SMS lag drives me nuts. Maybe better power management would be nice, though it seems they've done the best they can on this since Jobs has once said that Mac OS knows how to manage power and they've built that right into the OS...*grumbles*

Arn probably doesn't think it's important enough to even put on Page 2. :)

Doesn't mean a bad implementation or a bug in some feature can't do bad things to the battery life. I'm starting to notice that WiFi + MobileMe syncing = dead battery, even if I turn off push. Yet if I leave WiFi off, the battery will last literally double to quadruple the time.

An OS can be very battery efficient, but if an app or some other daemon sits there and grinds through the CPU, the battery will be drained pretty fast. Can't get around that other than fix the bad app/daemon.

Endless backups

I know it has nothing to do with the thread but since a lot of you are complaining about it here it is :
The solution for back ups time problems has been posted here :
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1598363&tstart=0

By a guy named " geauxracerx ".

Before doing this I had back-ups as long as 2 hours, now they hardly last longer than a minute !
Please note though, that you will loose all your applications data, but it's really worth the doing, believe me.. You do it once and for all.
EDIT :Also, the first back-up you'll do after that will be long, mine was 45 minutes with a lot of apps, but it's normal since this one is the actual full back up of the device. After that they're really quick, even after adding some applications data. I've done this a week ago and my back ups times are still under a minute.

Here is the actual post if you don't want to read the whole thread :

Honestly people here is the solution! I promise it works!

Go into iTunes Edit/Preferences the last tab sync disable auto sync for all iPod and iPhones. This does not fix it it is just the first step do not stop here.

Next connect your iPhone to the computer. Once it shows up in iTunes go into the last tab Applications. Uncheck sync all apps. not Click apply. Now click sync. it will remove all the applications! After it is finished unplug the iPhone. I bet you will have at least one app still on the Iphone, maybe more. Hold any icon down until they jiggle. tap the x's and delete all the remaing apps. You may notice after you delete each app that a little spinning circle is next to your 3G icon on the top right hand side. Let it finish spinning before you delete the next app.

Once you have deleted all the remaining apps (That had corrupt data that was causing your long back ups!) do a hard reset. To do this hold the sleep/wake button and the home button until the red slider appears at the top of the screen. Slide it over and the phone will power off. You will again notice the spinning circle. Once it finishes wait a few seconds and power the iPhone back on by pressing the sleep/wake button.

While it is booting back up go into iTunes again turn the auto sync back on! Now connect the iPhone to the computer, let it backup and sync. I bet you a million dollars it goes so fast you want to cry or laugh. Now after it finishes go back to the applications tab. Click sync apps again, but make sure you have the 2nd circle checked. This box is sync selected apps. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked! Now slowly begin adding apps back to the iPhone. I have done as many as 5 at a time. Check the boxes then click apply, then sync. It will backup then add the applications and sync all other information.

Someone try it and confirm to these people it works. I'm willing to put money on it! I have done it on both my iPhones and 4 others.

Here is the kicker! DO NOT update or install apps from the phone! Only use iTunes to install and or update apps until they get the bug fixed!

Dave

I got an app called "WildEyes" on my 1.1.4 iPhone that does exactly that. Don't know if they have a version for firmware 2.x yet. It involves an http server on the iPhone so Safari can access the PDFs etc. I sync my files over AFP usually, then the iPhone shows up like a network drive in the Finder.

I just want stability, its the major reason i downgrade from 2.0.x back to 1.1.4 .

-Search within iPod/Email would also be nice after all people have thousands of songs/100s of email. Speaking of email a unified inbox would also be nice

-I don't see video recording or any camera updates happening in the existing iPhone models, its probably coming when they boost the camera in the next revision

-Im not holding my breath for MMS either or even copy/past even though the latter will probably happen in the future.

-A full bluetooth stack would be welcomed as well

But all in all i want the stability of 1.1.4 first & foremost before i upgrade and the search thing would be a welcomed bonus although unlikely

In fact i think i'll be disappointed overall on Tues...hopefully i'm not

I don't want copy & paste, i don't want ichat, i just don't want to have a 30 second pause when i hit Contacts till the time i can actually search my contacts. Plus all the other delays, typing in SMS, sending an SMS, etc, etc. Lets fix these issues before releasing any "Hidden Features".

This has happened since 2.0.2

It's happened with 2.0 for me, on both versions of the iPhone. It is pathetic Apple hasn't fixed it yet, on top of all the other bugs. Stability better be coming.

So...buying a new iphone then?

Finally going to switch from blackberry to iphone if the new improvements seem to promise enough stability. Any idea (I'm only a recent convert -- also waiting sadly and frustratedly on the new macbooks) when the new updates would be available for purchase? I.e., could I go buy a phone Wednesday, or should I wait a week or two until new units are shipped?

Speculation: Tether

So, this morning I was checking out the NetShare site and they make reference to needing a "tether-authorized data plan from AT&T."

To my knowledge, there is not such thing yet.

My speculation, and I published it over at newsvine, is that they're going to announce a new data plan. They won't announce tethering, because they haven't had time to beta-test that - it's going to be a completely 3rd party process.

Here's my article:
http://darkside.newsvine.com/_news/...n-apple-to-announce-iphone-tethering-tomorrow

give me Copy+Paste, stability, profiles and I'll be happy
(Profiles for different system settings (like: sound settings, brightness, wireless, etc), mayb even different home screen layouts etc.

Different profile examples: atHome, atWork, Traveling, InCar, ParentsHouse, etc.. etc..)

and a built in way to share my net connection with my mac
