Sequoia 15.3.1, 15.7.7 or Tahoe 26.5.1?

Hello all,

Recently, I got a new Mac mini 2024, which mostly I plan to use for online banking & email. It came with macOS Sequoia 15.3.1 installed and has 2 software updates available, Tahoe 26.5.1 and Sequoia 15.7.7.

Would you stay with Sequoia 15.3.1 or update to either Tahoe 26.5.1 or Sequoia 15.7.7?

I appreciate your feedback.

You definitely need to update to something later than 15.3.1. I find 26 is working fine for me so I'd upgrade to that if it were my computer.

Thanks! With Tahoe 26.5.1 only being released less than 3 weeks ago on June 1, I'm leaning towards just upgrading to Sequoia 15.7.7, for the time being.

I have no problems with 26.5.1 on my M2 Pro or my M4. 26.5.1 actually fixed a Bluetooth problem of dropping my mouse.

For pure banking + email 15.7.7 covers you for security patches without giving you a UI to relearn. Tahoe 26.5.1 is genuinely fine now too (I run it on a Studio and an M3 Max MBP daily), but Liquid Glass plus the new system font rendering at default zoom is a bigger swallow than the version number suggests, and that's the kind of thing that matters when your use case is reading text on screen all day. If you don't need anything Tahoe-specific, 15.7.7 is the lower-stress pick — you can revisit when 26.6 lands later in the summer and a bigger chunk of the early-cycle rough edges are sanded. One thing not to skip either way: stop ignoring the 15.3.1 → anything jump, that's a real security gap.

Do you have another Mac? Does it have Tahoe on it? Do you like Tahoe?

The thing that keeps me in Sequoia is the appearance issues people were having with Liquid Glass, introduced in Tahoe. I have yet to visit an Apple Store in order to view the new appearance, and now there will soon be the public release of Golden Gate, so I guess I'm skipping Tahoe.

Stay on Sequoia if Liquid Glass is a problem for you or want better battery. Golden Gate beta is already better in that regard, and it's much faster

While you are waiting, you can do more research - on your perfectly up to date macOS Sequoia M4 Mac mini with latest security patches (15.7.8) looking at the Tahoe and/or Golden Gate forums to see if you would prefer to update to Tahoe sooner and/or wait for Golden gate, or just stick with Sequoia for longer.

Are there potential downsides to skipping over a version of MacOS? Will all settings port correctly when upgrading directly from Sequoia to Golden Gate? Any other issues that others might have experienced. I wouldn't want to do a full re-install.

I have skipped over upgrades in the past with no problems afterwards. I have even skipped over more that one version. I've read answers to this question in the past as well, from people who clearly had more knowledge about Macs than I do. I've never read one that said you can't skip.

I ended up updating to 15.7.7.
