Hi All,

This is my new post on the MacRumors forum.

I'm working as System integrator in one of the IT companies. I need to console in for configuring storage and network solutions for my Customers. As i'm a Mac Users i'm not able to get to console from my mac. I have to carry a Windows Machine just for the consoling only. I have this Aten Usb to Serial RS232 Model UC-232A for converting my usb to serials

Can someone help me. Thanks in advance.

Mohd Hamja

I can think of three options:
1) install bootcamp on your mac
2) run windows in VMware and attach the serial thingy to windows when you connect it (a dialog will pop up asking you)
3) (sketchy) there are some console emulators out there that run on mac, but some of them have very limited functionality, some cost (a lot) of money, but hardly have any functions, and some are free and quite good.

i'm aware of that. But how ever I wanted to use only the base OS only. If I were to install the Windows over parallels or VMware Fusion. I'll be losing 20gig of space on my SSD.

I have the driver for Mac OS X 10.4 for the Aten UC232A. How to install the driver and get the device detected by the OS.?

Thank you in advance.

If you use an adapter that uses a PL2303 device (IOGear is one of many), there are 64-bit OS-X drivers (kexts) available. They work as native serial devices, so apps like ZTerm (works fine in Lion) will work fine with them. They can also be used in a VM, like Parallels, and mapped to a COM port.

You can get a FT232 based adapter, the drivers from FTDICHIP, and only 10 bucks lighter :).
