Are there multiple versions of Series 1 Apple Watch?

I am buying an used one on Craiglist for a family member. I notice that there are at least two different box packaging for the same series and same model (aluminum, space gray, black sports band (MP032LL/A or MP032CL/A)). One of the packaging has a taller box than the other. Some has a acrylic case inside; some don't. Yet, the UPC code for them are all identical.

I am very confused... Can someone explain? Which one is which?

If it’s got the white plastic box in the box, then that’s not a series 1.

Series 0 came with the taller cardboard box and the plastic case and was branded as Apple Watch Sport for the aluminium models.

Series 1 dropped the plastic case and so the box is smaller. It also lost the sport brand name and is just Apple Watch.

The underside of the Watch itself should say series 1 if its a series 1 and Apple Watch Sport is it’s the older model.

What they said. Lots of confusion on the Watch versions. People don’t realize Series 1 is an updated watch from the older orig watch. If packaging is confusing the back of the watch label clears it up. Series 1 and 2 are marked with that name on the back.

I am glad to have asked this question...

The seller sent me two photos of the box (one of the side, one of the bottom). The photo of the side shows it is a taller (square shaped) box. It says "Watch Sport 42mm Case". This suggests that it is a Series 0 as you said. However, the second photo shows the bottom side with the label "Apple Watch S1 42mm SpGr Al Black Sp". This suggests instead that it is Series 1.

Are you certain about these details of the box packaging? Otherwise, is the seller sending me photos of two different boxes trying to pretend that they are the same?

The seller is quite far away from where I lived. So I am not keen in meeting the seller just to sort out this detail. Unfortunately, pickings are slim in my rural neighborhood, so waiting for another seller may take a long while.

Can you post the photos here. There might be some confusion. They both have the long rectangular box, but the S0 came with a white plastic container in the box to hold the watch.

Sadly, Mlrollin91, you are one post late. I deleted the photos already after reading KrisLord's advice earlier.

Okay. It might have been helpful to keep them in the thread incase others have a similar inquiry down the road. Because the box itself is exactly the same, its the internals that are different.

Mlrollin91,

As I understood from KrisLord, the box is NOT the same. The older one is has a taller (but still rectangular) box. The newer one is a squashed version of the rectangular box.

I don’t have 42mm series 0 anymore as I upgraded to a series 1.

But here’s my wife’s 38mm series 0 and my series 1 box, clearly showing the boxes are different sizes.

Sounds like it’s a box of two different parts (mismatched box) the side label showing ‘sport’ is the box lid whereas the bottom label showing S1 is the box innard. So it sound like both lid and inner box are from two different boxes...The bottom label should show serial number which should correspond with the watch in watch Settings. If not then its probably not original packaging which isn’t that big a deal so long as its all functioning well. However you still need to work out wether you’re buying a s0 or s1?
