Yes. Larger watch is compatible with larger bands, smaller with smaller.

Compatibility:
- 38 mm -> 40 mm -> 41 mm -> new 42 mm
- old 42 mm -> 44 mm -> 45 mm -> 46 mm and Ultra

This article is misleading, it makes no distinction between old 42 mm (larger bands) and new 42 mm (smaller bands)

I have the new 42 and bands I have from my very first 38 actually fit quite well although they are much looser. I have nice Kate Spade link bands that fir my 40 and 41 and are now not fitting right. It is too big with the links I had and then removing one link it is just too tight. I am kind of dissappointed.
