I wonder if this is happening to the other colors due to the aluminum back. Or just the JB.

I use a case with my AW that covers the back and always keep it clean. So it’s not caused by sand or dust. Apart from the spotted back, the rest of the watch is pristine.

Thanks for sharing. This shows a design flaw or your watch case is defective as the “cosmetic” damage is on the back of the watch.
From other people posting here and other sites, most of the JB watches seem to be peeling at the back. As someone else mentioned. It can be the paint reacting to sweat.

I don't use a case and the front and sides of my JB AW look like new. But the back is really messed up with chipping paint.

It is definitely an issue to some extent as another user here has exactly the same problem with tiny chips on the back surface of his watch.

Mine is thankfully in great condition and I don't generally clean mine after exercise and doing chores, but I also don't sweat a hell of a lot. Hoping I don't see this issue in future as I tend to keep my Apple watches 4 or 5 years. Apple definitely need to address this as I doubt its just happening to 2 users here.
Not a jet black series 10 user but I agree that it’s important to maintain the condition of your watch by doing a wipe down on it as recommended by Apple, regularly (even swapping out bands) and working out. I even used to pop on a case a few times on my watch when I took machining class and I do a clean down after I took it off.

I even have a dresser drawer filled with screen cleaning sprays to wipe down my Apple devices.

As Inmentioned earlier. I keep my watch and case clean. I’ve owned Apple Watches since series 2. And this is the first one I have this problem.

It is the paint job, not the care. And people with other colors are not experiencing this issue.

jet black finishes are surely sensitive. the iPhone 7 of its yesteryear folks were in the same boat.

Late to the party but I had really bad chipping on the back of my jet black Series 10 after about 6 months of ownership. I’ve owned a S2 and S7 before that did not have this issue after many years. I took it to Apple and they replaced it. I recall the tech looking through some internal handbook on his iPad and finding some notes about this problem which is why they replaced it under warranty. Now that I’m hyper aware of this issue, I’m noticing that my replacement has started developing some really small chips around the band removal buttons. I’m going to take it in to Apple to flag this issue because I think it’s just going to get worse over time. It’s making me think about upgrading even though it’s not even a year old.

Upgrading is the only solution. It keeps happening.

And now Space Gray is back

The “space gray” looks really light. At best it is similar to both the Apple Watch Ultra natural titanium and maybe the Series 11 natural titanium. I need to see reviews or models and in stores, but disappointed to far. They need a midnight or something

Yep, I chose space gray since there isn’t another choice for anything even semi dark, but I’m not thrilled about it since it’s barely darker than the silver, at least judging from the photos. If*** the device works well in other ways than I’ll probably get used to it and not mind too much…. but the dark green of my S7 not too many years ago was nice.
It’s too bad because jet black looks great and matches / blends in more (for me at least).

10-15 years later from the jet black iphone, they still can’t figure it out, how to have a decent black finish on phones or watches without widespread peeling or whatever it’s called. Even ipads, my 1-year-old space gray (?) or whatever it’s called ipad even has its coating falling off, near the power connection, which never happened with lighter color (silver/gray) ipads.

Yeah I don’t get why Apple can’t get that jet black right. Even cheapo flashlights and knives have a more durable black coating. And those tools take a lot more abuse than a watch.

Apple can even go with car paint and it’ll probably be more durable and cheaper than whatever anodization they are currently using.
