Do you think a series 2 watch which gives me a $40 discount over the series 3 sport watch is a good deal. I like that the series 2 has the ceramic back but obviously the newer watch is faster.

I personally would spend the $40 and upgrade to the Series 3. That's not much big of a price difference. The composite backing can scratch, but I see that as a non-issue, as The Apple Watch is either on your wrist or docked on the charger. Just be cautious when setting the watch on its back or on hard surfaces.

I don’t get why Apple has different backs at all - they look identical and have no real functional difference.

Also, $40 is well worth the faster performance and Siri functionality. It’ll also resell for more when you’re finished with it so you’ll recover some of the $40.

The ceramic back doesn't scratch easily but the composite (ie. plastic) does. the microfine scuffs on the composite have IMHO never caused the optical HR sensor to not function correctly (on Apple or any other myriad of other companies like Fitbit and Garmin that use composite sensor covers) so its really an "esthetic issue" more than a functional one. you can polish the composite back to near perfect using some plastic polish before you go to sell it if thats important to you...

For two reasons I believe:

1.) One reason I think they do it is they use it as another incentive for the consumer to want to purchase the more expensive model. Similarly to why they use the sapphire display on the stainless model, which they probably could use a sapphire display on the sport model if they wanted to. But Apple wants to give the "Better" features to the higher end models.

2.) Also, I think in order to keep the price point Lower for the entry level sport watches, they use cheaper alternatives such as the Ion- X Glass and composite backing. If they implemented the most expensive features like the Sapphire/ceramic backing, then That would also increase the price point.

More people would buy the cheaper models which have a lower profit margin.

Which is why Apple wants to keep the Series One affordable and how they have reduced the price point over the last two years for the sport model watch. That is by far the most popular model Apple Watch manufactured, even likely compared to the stainless, ceramic and Hermes combined altogether.

I agree with both points.

I just find the sapphire screen difference a genuine value added improvement (although i find the ion glass fine). I find the back options a marketing gimmick. They could have just used composite on all of them and no one would care.
