After having been a S3 Space Gray user for almost a year now I'm in the market for S4.

While I still find the SG sleeker than Silver I'm kind of having second thoughts every now and then as maybe I'd like a bit of a change. Yet I can't get rid of the feeling that Silver looks a tad cheap compared to SG.

Unfortunately the nearest Apple Store is too far for me to go check the watches in person, so I was wondering if you guys could post some pics of Silver here in this thread? Esp. from angles where the silver housing is more apparent for me to judge.

Is the aluminum on Silver watch as polished as on Space Gray, or is it a bit rougher when you touch it?

My experience with the aluminum models looking at them in store, is they are smooth to the touch, but give the visual appearance of having some texture. This is because they've got an annodized finish. Stainless models literally look dripping wet but have a smooth finish as well.

Regarding appearance about looking cheap, to some, all aluminum models look cheap. In reality, the only opinion that matters is yours. GPS vs GPS + Cellular aside, they all do the same thing. As I've noted in many threads, there are SVP's and other executives in my company and in others who wear aluminum Apple Watches with the original bands they come with. Smart watches do not carry the same stigma as traditional watches do, so pick a color that suits you and go for it!

^^This.

I have had a SS Silver S0 & S2 and SS Space Black S3, but have gone for a SG Nike + this time. I am a middle aged man (hurts saying that as in my mind I am 21!), and realised that as an annual upgrader I was losing too much money on resale on my Watch. And it is a smart watch, not a traditional watch. It is a bit of tech, not a classic watch. I am also in the good position of having a lovely Rolex that I got a few years ago for my 40th and since 2015 I have hardly worn it. I now wear my S4 Nike daily and if I want to dress up, I leave my AW at home and wear the Rolex. The Stainless are gorgeous, but to me a £450 loss in a year, every year is too much.

I am a total geek and love tech, but I can no longer justify it for what is essentially the same thing.

Others situations vary, but in my situation it works. The SG with a nice strap still looks smart. In fact, it will always smart as it is a smart watch :)

as @staggerlee41 said, it is what works for you - don't worry what others think of your watch - what do YOU like and what makes you happy.

Looks so much better in person though. It’s got this lightly textured look to it kinda like the aluminum on a MacBook

All of the Apple Watch sport models use the same anodized finish on the 7000 series aluminum. The texture feels exactly the same with the silver, as does the space gray.

I went from the series 3 space grey to the series 4 silver (with black sport band as above) and love it. I also feel it is slightly more resistant to noticeable marks. The one mark I managed to get on my SG series 3 was a little chip in the SG which showed through silver underneath.

Thanks for that comparison.

Would someone mind posting some pics of Silver with various leather straps? For example I have a black one with silver lugs and a dark blue one with silver lugs and I'm not sure how good it would really look with Silver. It looks good with my Space Gray tho.

Another question is how would Silver work with black & volt Nike band? Probably not the best combination... does sb have a pic by chance?

I used to think so too, but I got one this year to change things up. It actually looks surprisingly sharp with certain band combinations.
During the week, I throw a leather band on my space gray S3 and it looks great. Lots of positive comments from people. On weekends, I throw the original rubber band back on and go play. Works out fine for me. Space gray all the way!

I think it is just personal preference. Heard loads of people saying how great the SG looks, so went with it for the S4. Returned it after a week as I just much prefer the look of the silver. My (unadventurous) advice would be not to go for something you don't like as much if it's just for a change!!

Thanks for your input.

One thing I'm also considering is the resale value. It seems that SG would have better resale value than Silver, since the former is apparently more popular?

Any aluminum model would have better resale, regardless of the color. But the silver aluminum pairs virtually with almost any band, the space gray may have some limitations, so in theory, you might find more buyers would be interested in the silver aluminum model for that reason alone.

Yeah... I’m just a silver guy. I like the silver aluminum and SS. It’s not that I think the SG looks bad. I think it looks great. I just like silver a bit more. It offers some contrast and works well with any color band.

Maybe this can help:

The only problem with the comparison photos is that I think the aluminum cases look worse when you seem them alongside a SS case. When you view them on their own, they look much better! When I shopped for my first Apple Watch in 2015, I just had to ignore the SS models at the Apple Store and focus on comparing the silver aluminum and space gray aluminum (I had already decided on a less expensive aluminum model). It was tough, because the SS was beautiful (of course I had to try one on). After I walked out of the store with a silver aluminum case, I kept thinking about the SS for a few days... wondering if I should have splurged. That feeling went away pretty quickly and I was very happy with the way the silver aluminum looked. I may get a SS one of these years, but the aluminum is appropriate for where I live and how I dress these days. I live in a small city in the Pacific NW where people dress casual even by Seattle standards. The vast majority of Apple Watches I see around here are aluminum (Space Gray being the most popular among men).
