So, i have the Space Black SS 44. Coming into this, i thought that the DLC coating will prevent scratches. I have had a Series 0 regular stainless steel prior to this.

While it does prevent minor (hairline) scratches, it can be scratched with a simple bump of watch into a hard object (such as wall)...DLC coating maybe harder than regular SS but not as impervious as i had thought. The good news? Since it is black, i don’t see the scratches much at all. Only at certain angle of light.

My fear was that a scratch would show the underlying SS, but that is not the case...maybe the coating is fairly thick?

I have included other pics showing the normal viewpoint....basically cannot see the scratches.

Dang! I have had mine since November and have zero scratches. I had a series 2 SS SB that had some scratches, but I didn’t cause them. It was a second hand. I just wonder what can scratch the coating.

I have exactly the same problem. Annoying .. I did apple care for the clock, maybe they'll let me replace?

I look at mine very closely once a week when it get a bath. I have even seen whet I thought was a scratch but after washing my black stainless S4 it just scratch free and pristine.

Wish that was the case with me...but i can feel the scratch with my fingernail.

The coating protects against scratches, but these are more like nicks / gouges from bumping into something.

Dust and rubbing will scratch the regular SS, which this coating protects from. But if you bump up against something the coating can be damaged. AppleCare is not likely to replace over this. The damage needs to be more than cosmetic.

Honestly, the pictures provided look fine--like some normal wear and tear. It isn't until you get the huge gouges that the space black starts to look kind of bad. Just watch where you fling your wrist ;)

Chance are you accidentally hit ir against something. My friend ruined his black stainless when drunk and fell into a masonry wall. Even the sapphire was damaged.

It all can be scratched under the right conditions.
