Hi, I just recently made the jump from an S1 to an S5. It was well worth the upgrade, but one thing that caught my eye was a visible gap between the crown and the body of the watch, to the point where I can see the stem. The crown works fine, including ECG, but I'm concerned about dust and dirt getting down there. Is this normal for the new model? I've attached a couple of pictures which hopefully show what I mean.

Thanks!

I just looked at mine for the first time and mine looks just like yours. Not sure what “normal” is. Haven’t showered with mine and have only had it a week or so, but I have AppleCare+ so I’m not too worried.

Some gap is necessary. In addition to rotating, the Digital Crown presses. It's a button.

I don't see the stem in your photos. I do see what I'm pretty sure is a reflection that could be interpreted as the stem.

My S5 looks like yours otherwise. Don't worry about it.

Enjoy your fantastic new Watch!

Yeah that's not a reflection

I suppose I could just have Amazon replace it, at least then I wouldn't be without it while Apple repairs it. Bummer.

Ok yea that’s a much better pic. Now I see stem. Shouldn’t be like that.

Mine looks like yours in all the pics even the one with the light shining behind it. As mentioned, it rotates and presses so it requires a gap. I run mine under water all the time to rinse it and no issues. The pic with the light source is washing out the edges of the crown and case making the gap look wider than it is. In the first two pics, the case is overlapping the crown and that’s how it should be. You can go ahead and exchange it, it’s your hard earned money... but I’d bet the replacement will look exactly the same and you’d be wasting your time.

Here’s my thoughts:

Without knowing the exact tolerances of the Digital Crown, If everything is perfectly functional, then leave it alone. I would not return it, unless you’re noticing any type of side to side play/irregularitiesWith the push-button or orientation of the crown.

The S1 crown also rotates and presses, but has no discernible gap. It's recessed slightly into the case. So did the gap increase with later generations? That is my question.

FWIW, I’ve had my series 5 since launch, wear it every day for running (caught many times in show or rain) and have had zero issues. I just checked mine and it looks exactly like yours. I’m pretty sure it’s normal and won’t cause any issues.
