That’s how it maintains the same 18 hour battery life despite an always on display. No gains in battery life unless watchOS lets you turn off the always on display.

Unfortunately, the bigger Series 5 model has almost the same battery (1.12 vs. 1.13 is not that big of a difference). I've had the S3 and S4 and the battery life of the S3 is exceptional. On a normal day, the S3 went down to about 66% battery, while the S4 always was below 50%, sometimes even down to 30%. I checked the PDF file and the S3 has indeed the biggest battery (1.34 Wh).

With the S3 I could easily do two days, with the S4 the battery dies during the afternoon or evening of the second day.

I can get 2 days easy on my series 2, so i have to say 18hr reported time for the series 5 is a disappointment. Still i will try it, i can always wear the S2 if i wake up to find i forgot to put the S5 on the charger.

18 hours was also the indicated battery life for Series 2.
