yep me too, looked everywhere and no mention of a sapphire screen which is very, very weird as it is always listed because it is a reason to get the SS and up models. for the moment i have to believe it is just an oversight but if it turns out all apple watches have gone to ion-x it is going to be a blockbuster news story in the apple blogger community... i just think it will turn out they do still have sapphire.

It looks like the SS model has dropped by £50 in the UK for the 44mm S6 compared to the S5. Could it be that the saving is the removal of the sapphire front? That was the reason I went for the SS S5 over the aluminium and a year later it’s still scratch free. If the Sapphire has gone that a major loss in my books.

I ordered AW6 SS and if I find that it is ion-x I send them back.

I won’t support the ion-X glass, it’s pure garbage in every way possible. My only option is if it’s not included on the stainless, then titanium it is. I’m not going to let the lack-there- of sapphire display thwart my experience with the Apple Watch, when I realize I’m not the ‘norm‘, but I would just rather upgrade to the titanium . But it is a crucial part of my purchase.

Aluminum models seem to still be ion-x.

I don’t understand the hate of the regular glass. A year in and I can’t see one single scratch. Like, I’m sure there are exceptions but I don’t see anyone standing up for it?

Do you ever bump your watch into things? I hit mine on walls, the ground, etc frequently so I have always gotten the SS to avoid the scratches.

I looked in the tech specs of the S6 and I don't see anything that mentions the glass on the front , I Don't think the new Alum S6 has the sapphire can someone point me in the right direction to see if it has it or not? Thanks!

check out this cool apple watch series 6 page and tour AW6 virtually. It does says Ion-X, i was wishing for sapphire glass in aluminum :p BTW ion-x glass is good too but i use things very gently.

I do. I mean I work in an office, not construction. But I’m pretty active. It’s held up fine for me. I’ve been content with the alum last go. So much so I am not eager to pay the extra money for sapphire. It’s been fantastic.

I'm with you...I always had AL since S0. My displays always held up fine. Of course, I trade-in every year, so maybe that has something to do with it, haha!!

I will say: I got a S5 Ti last year and the display is absolutely flawless after banging it around several times.

For sure. I’d most prefer plain titanium. I’m just unwilling to pay the difference (;

100% with you on this.

As I knew I would regularly change this watch, I have always gone for the Alu one.

I started with the Series 4, currently have a Series 5 and plan to get a Series 6 in the next few days.

I have had no damage to either the body or the screen of either the 4 or 5 so far, so I have no hesitation in going for the Ion–X glass model for the 6.

I guess if you work in construction or you’re a rock climber or something incredibly active like that, it could be different, but for me as an office worker, I’ve had no issue.

(I can appreciate though why people would’ve been very annoyed if the Stainless Steel and Titanium watches had Sapphire Glass removed from the specification.)

I have an AW4 in aluminum and just ordered a SS AW6 (had a AW2 prior to the AW4). I used the AW4 for about a year then decided to go back to a regular watch for 6 months. During those 6 months I let me dad use the watch. In the year I had it the glass was scratch free. In the 6 months my dad used it, it got very scratched up. So I definitely think it's not just the glass but how careful you are with the watch.

There is no hate on it, it works fine.. Sapphire is more durable, and if you pay more you should get the more premium material.

There is no hate on it.. It's just when you pay a premium you'd expect a premium material. Apple is slowly lifting prices and cutting corners.

I’m not saying I don’t understand why people would be upset if Apple changed without notice the material. I’m speaking more generally about the flood of comments about how the glass scratches like crazy.

I’m not even saying those people are wrong. I doubt they’re lying about having scratched screens when they don’t. I’m only reflecting that on my own experience the glass is highly durable.

And who knows about the back. Perhaps the difference in light transmission made a difference for the new rear sensors.

Curious on how long you think you'll use the SS AW6 considering you used the AW4 for 1. This is kinda why I don't think going to an upgraded material for this piece of tech makes any dollars sense. I guess if you like the looks that much and money doesn't matter, sure.. If you use it for only 2 yrs thats 30 bucks a month.. For what I consider disposal/nice to have tech...

I got ya.. So I've worn Apple Watches since release, the first gen for 4 years and my current 5.. For 4 years of use is a good sample. I'm not overly clumsy and I take care of my devices. The first gen I have a pretty large scratch on it that goes across the face, how I got it? Who knows.. If held at a certain angle you can see a lot of micro scratches. To me, completely normal given the amount of usage it has. My AW5 still looks new after a year of bumping it on the occasional car door or gate. I have zero issues with the glass in the base models.

This is why I only go with the base model AW, and will use it 3-4 years before upgrading.

Oh yeah. I toyed with the idea of going titanium and planning to keep it longer but the annual refresh cycle with the growing features and complexity makes me hesitant to do it.

Although I’m on an iPhone X and don’t plan to upgrade this year. (I was but Apple replaced my failing battery and ended up giving me a refurbished phone, so I’m on effectively a new but dated model). Possibly my wife may get this phone and I may upgrade hers but everything seems to be working fine.

I anticipate keeping the AW6 for at least three upgrade cycles. I used the AW2 for two years before upgrading to the 4, and had a used AW1 (or maybe a 0, can't remember) for about three-four months before the AW2 came out to make sure I'd like it. So almost three 1/2 years with an AW. I was ready to just go back to a regular watch. I was also running more and wanted a GPS watch where you could manually start a new lap. After being away I realize I like the AW too much and don't see myself stepping away again.

Apples Model is and has always been, They want to reward essentially their customers who are paying for their ‘higher premium’ models, you get ‘more for your money‘. By providing sapphire to all models, that would detract away from the more expensive models and would be a ‘poor business‘ practice for Apple trying to maximize their profit off the Apple Watch.

I have had the series 0 and Series 4. Both times I opted for the SS model and paid a premium mainly for the Sapphire face glass. Most quality watch faces have a sapphire crystal face for a reason (to be durable and help prevent scratches). It is very strange this cycle that they no longer advertise the sapphire front on the SS models.
