I picked up my new Series 6 AW today and it had a totally flat battery out of the box.

In all my years of buying apple products I’ve never had one totally flat.

Have I just been lucky in the past or is this something to be concerned about?

My concern is that it being flat out of the box indicates a battery issue that could show later in its life.

I would suggest that you contact Apple Support and see if they can do a battery check remotely on your watch, and also see what they say about the battery being fully discharged when you received it.

If the discussion with Apple doesn't satisfy you (or even if it does) you can return the watch for full credit and order a new one. You want to be completely satisfied with it, and if you think that you'll always have doubts then that might be the best plan.

Just finished with Apple support that said sometimes devices do arrive totally empty. And so long as they accept a charge fine that they're typically fine.

Certainly fully depleting once won't harm the battery, but just concerned about underlying issues. But I can take it back any time over the next year I guess if there's issues.

I'm a natural worrier

On the watch, you can go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to check the battery condition. Maximum capacity should be 100%. If it is, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Of all the $ I've ever given Apple (way too much) - I'd say at least a handful of devices came completely flat (100% depleted) from the factory - sealed. A MacBook, at least a few iPhones, and one iPad. I watch battery capacity religiously with coconutBattery - didn't seem to affect these devices (yeah it probably wasn't great but didn't have a noticeable effect on them vs my other devices that usually come 85% from factory).

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Even better, AppleCare+ so if it falls below 80% in 2 years, you're good.

Sounds good. Enjoy the watch and if you feel that it isn't holding charge satisfactorily, then you can follow up with them.

Is this your first Apple watch?

I'm replacing my Series 3. Even though I'm only going from 42mm to 44mm and the physical size is so similar the extra screen size makes it feel huge.

I didn't think it would make as big a difference as it does.

My series 5 came out the box with a completely dead battery. Works totally fine. I guess it was on the shelf for longer than expected and the battery drained itself. It happens, nothing to worry about.

My Series 6 from the Amazon deal last week also came completely flat. I chalked it up to them probably sitting around for a while, hence the steep discount.

After charging, it seems fine? Of course it's only been a day or two.
