I am looking to upgrade my series 1 42mm watch. I have three options:

1) series 8 41 mm for $349
2) series 7 45 mm for $309
3) SE 2020 44mm version for $179

is the ECG, oxygen sensors and all the extra sensors worth the extra $$? Is the SE 2020 too old to even consider as it will stop receiving updates in a few years? Any advice would be greatly appreciate.

If that's the original SE I would not get it just because of how long you kept your series 1. Also it doesn't have the always on display. That means your choices are 7 or 8. Yes the larger watch is something you want then maybe get the 7 but if not go for the 8 because it's going to last the longest. The $50 there isn't a significant amount compared to the total price.

For me the series 8 is what I replace my original and the reason is the battery wore out on the original version. I went with the series 8 because of the extra sensors as I have heart disease and need those to monitor my heart. I had no heart issues but it was caught on a CT scan for another problem. In my opinion the series 8 is the best version to get but as you posted I suspect that you are a veteran as it is the price I paid for mine by ordering from the military/veteran apple website.

How old are you? Do you or your family have a history of heart disease? I think you need to consider some basic health questions in order to determine whether an EKG is relevant. That‘s far more importsnt than random Internet stranger anecdotes. I’m late 40s and better than average shape. I initially went with the 2020 SE as I felt the EKG feature wasn’t something I needed. I’ve upgraded to an S8 and now have the EKG feature, and i appreciate it, but all the same, if I was in my 20s and in good shape I wouldn’t be too concerned about it.

You can also ask your doctor if it would be beneficial based on your health profile.

Thank you, I appreciate it. I am in the same age category with a heart history.

Thank you, I appreciate it. I am kind of leaning towards the series 8 too. My battery wore out on the series 1 this past summer (bubbled up and pushed the screen off). I replaced the battery, but it's showing it's age.

Easy choice in that case. With some heart history I wouldn't hesitate and would get something with an EKG. In the grand scheme of things it's a small price differential.

I went with the S8 over the S7 because I buy aluminium models and wanted the silver. The S7 aluminium does not have that option. The S8 has a few other features too but they're somewhat insignificant. Car crash detection, more granular power saving features, temperature sensor (currently largely useless for males), updated Bluetooth (5.3 vs 5.0). But you can't go wrong with either IMO.
