could someone please tell me what Jabber is. I got a new imac g5 and was dissapointed to learn that msn messenger and ichat does not do video conferencing. I do not want to get 10 of my relatives who use msn messenger install aim i would rather go ichat to msn messenger
Jabber is an open source instant messenging protocol. However, I don't know much more about it than that. Support for this protocol (in addition to AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)) is provided in Tiger iChat.

As for video conferencing via MSN - currently a no-no, but one day Microsoft might think about adding it for the Mac version. But who knows when?

Well I like ichat

Well I like iChat for the most part and I use it all the time for text and a/v stuff. Support for buddy list tabs would be nice though. As for msn and yahoo support well i guess msn because I know their are a some people who use it (though I don't know why) and I feel for them. But yahoo support, I don't know a single person who uses yahoo instant messenger, I mean who here even dose and why? Oh ya compatibility with ICQ would be nice as well. Also im sorry but iChats a/v stuff is the best around by far including all the stuff on pc's too.

Anyways in my opinion there should be would wide movement that everybody changes to one client so everyone can talk to anyone because the corporation who make those chats program sure as hell wont. :D

Just thought of two more things I'd like to be able to do.

- A different sound for going offline and away. By the sound now I can never tell.
- An option to just show buddy icons/pics so a really small buddy list would be possible

I agree with the ichat comments but unfortunately aim is a fugly client and in Europe a lot of people just use msn "because I had it on my computer".
:(

You can already change the sounds in the Preferences (Alerts panel). I use system sound "blow" as my 'buddy online' sound. You can add any more sounds (e.g. your own sounds) using the Add/Remove option.

What I meant was a different sound for buddies going away and going offline . Because right now I cannot tell by the sound whether people are going away or offline. There has to be a distinction.

I guess my post could've been misinterpreted.

Oh sorry, I see now. I guess I did misinterpret your post. :) It's something that could be added, but it doesn't really bother me since it pretty much means the same thing anyway (i.e. they are no longer available).
