Serious trouble with Rules in Mail program

Holy cow! I set up a rule to bounce back a message to anyone emailing me that I will be out of town and I'll contact them when I get back. I applied the rule and now that rule is going through every email already in my Inbox (1,000s and 1,000s) and sending them that message over and over again. Needless to say friends/family/co-workers and worst of all clients are getting pissed at my spamming. Is there any way to stop this or is it too late?

uh, lol. Quit out of Mail, then delete your Mail preferences file (at least I think that's where the Rules are; might want to wait until someone can confirm).

Definitely quit out of Mail, which I assume you've done.
