I never said verizon is "so good", in fact I said that AT&T is superior IF you are in an area with AT&T coverage. Which is most areas, but not all areas. So there are some people for whom Verizon is a better choice (poor coverage with AT&T), and there are some for whom Sprint is a better choice (people who use a lot of data and live in a good Sprint coverage area, and would benefit from the unlimited Sprint data package).

But for most people, AT&T is a better choice (faster data connection, simultaneous voice/data, and more flexibility in pricing). That's why AT&T has more iPhone users.

agree with you there. I am still amused by the iPhones 4S sales data, ATT beating Sprint+Verizon handsomely

if you directed that question then i live in Portland, OR. metro area not a big metro area.

I was directing that at the OP.

Where I live the coverage is pretty much the same between the two, but when you start heading into the boonies AT&T will drop to edge while Verizon still might have 3G. Switching isn't worth Verizon's slow 3G IMO. My experience being in larger cities (NYC, DC, etc.) is that they all suck or all work fine, pretty much depends on where your at.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Go for it! Why pay for something, albeit cheap, if it does not serve you?

Luckily for us, the AT&T service here near Chicago is great for us. Sorry to hear your experience is not!

okay, agreed if you are in rural area or dense metro cities like NYC, then it really matters which is best coverage and rest of the small town/cities i think all the three are same

and i understand there are some area there is coverage from only one either att or verizon or sprint.

correct me if I am wrong

1) Roll over minutes
2) $15 - 200MB data plan

minimum data plan for Verizon $30...

200MB data plan? We aint running Nokia flip phones from 2005 Son. We are getting into the Gigabytes now. $15 for 200MB? I will make sure to let grandma know. 200MB? LOL $15 to download half of a movie isn't cheap Son. I have $30 for unlimited data on 4G LTE now that's the deal right there. 200MB for $15? Please, what are we suppose to do with 200MB? have overages every month in the $50 range? you will if you use your phone to do anything Smart. Dumbphone plans should be cheaper right? Hell 200MB they could just throw that in for free, grandma can now check her email 6 times this month :)

AT&T was the only game in town for the iPhone so they rapped people to have one. Like paying $30 more a month than everyone else to have the iPhone? They did it. Now that Verizon has the iPhone (which they didn't let Apple dictate their company like AT&T) and Verizons prices werent effected because they run their own company and rely on themselves for awesome service and now LTE where AT&T got it's name from Apple. Verizon prices went up a little due to inflation just like the rest of em, I think AT&T prices were the least effected to go up because they were already so high. Now that iPhone is on Sprint, Verizon that good ol AT&T don't got People by the nuts anymore who want the Heavenly iPhone.

I switched to verizon with the 4s and returned it within the 2 week period your allowed. Verizon 3G seemed slower than AT&T on my old iPhone 3G. At&t gave me back my unlimited data plan and rollover minutes. Then I ordered the 4s on AT&T. $30 cheaper a month due to my grandfathered plan. I think the 4s will be better on AT&T if youre happy with their service.

Exactly right! Grandma is on my family plan account, she checks her email & maybe facebook on 3G but that's about it. She's not streaming movies, or downloading podcasts over 3G. She might Skype a bit on 3G but usually she'll be home where she has WiFi.

Her iPhone adds $9.99 for voice plus $15 for data to my family plan. Can't do that on Verizon.

$30.00 is for the 2GB of data plan, which is lots more than 200 MB for ATT

Granted, the phone roll over minutes is nice.

I wouldn't have my grandma on my phone plan on Verizon you are right. I have 4g LTE for $30 unlimited, you can't do that on AT&T. If I had to have my grandma on my phone plan id hook her up with something like what I have with the 4.3 inch screen, because grandma is old and I don't want her squinting to look at her screen. If you're gonna do grandma do her right I say!

Also, the AT&T unlimited texting plan gives you unlimited mobile to any mobile minutes, which allows you to buy a plan with less regular minutes.

Yeah Verizon does that too, free Verizon to Verizon. Glad I have Verizon because everybody I know has it.

I have had horrible luck with phone calls on my 4S with AT&T. (Dropped calls, no audio, failed calls, and static - just poor reception all together.) I've been with the same carrier forever (originally was Cingular) and I thought things would get better, not worse.

I'm really considering switching to Verizon, but I don't want to lose my cheap plan with AT&T (I don't think they even offer the same plan now) if I find that Verizon is no better. See, Verizon is going to easily cost me an additional $40 per month. So, I'd like to "try" Verizon.

I'm thinking of going and starting a new plan for my husband and I, since it's mostly us calling each other, and getting two iPhone 4S. Try them out while I still have time to back out of my new contract with AT&T. Is this an insane idea, or a smart one?

Now, if I find Verizon is much better and worth the switch, will I be able to change my assigned Verizon numbers to my old AT&T numbers or am I going to have to go through the hassle of notifying everyone and their brother of my new phone number?

Thanks for any feedback.

Did you ask Apple to replace the phone as we discussed several times?

The problems you list indicate to me a hardware issue -- static almost never happens because it is digital, drop outs yes, static no. Not sure why you seem to be resistant going to Apple about these issues and asking for a replacement. You've spent more time typing, discussing, and researching online then it would have been to take it to an Apple genius to see what they think and get a replacement :)

Grandfathered unlimited data plan plus a 24% plan discount through my wife's work has us sticking with ATT. In our area ATT beats the other carriers coverage-wise...

ATT also waived the $36 upgrade fee for two phones when I called when our first bill arrived. At first the ATT rep told me that she could not waive the upgrade fee, but I told her that the ATT store salesperson told me the fee would be waived, so she checked with a supervisor and adjusted my bill.

No, it includes free calling to ANY mobile provider.

With pick 5 family or friends plan and 900 Anytime minutes, with free nights and weekends I don't even use the minutes I got. I get a 20% work discount applied. In fact I get a discount with every carrier and Sprint being the most 25% off, but I tried them and they kinda sucked

Here's an idea. If you don't mind paying extra $70 for just one month, join verizon, and keep your ATT. Try out Verizon for 14-30 days, and compare directly with ATT. If you don't like it, drop it. If you do, drop ATT, and port your number over. Everyone has different experience with ATT vs Verizon depending on where you live. I love ATT where I am at. But others swear by Verizon. Try it out...

Well, you make a valid point. My concern is that if it's not the phone, and it's the service provider, I'm about to be locked into two years more with AT&T. So I'd like to try VZ out. Although, I tried today and no VZ stores around here have the phones in stock and ordering them will be cutting it too close. I guess I'm going to have to get my phone looked at and also look into the home boost from AT&T.

yes but your comparing older plans. Verizon had some CHEAP older plans back in the day. Go to verizonwireless.com and ATT.com and you'll see verizon and AT&T copy each others plans.

If you get verizon's cheapest plan w/ unlimited texts it would be $90 + $60. So $150/month + tax.

Yes yours is cheaper but only b.c you have the lower data plan. Verizon doesnt offer that plan anymore. I honestly dont see how anyone can use that little data lol. Even my grandmother uses more internet than that. Using google maps once uses up like 20-30 mbs.

Well, exactly. I'm the OP. This is about "my" situation and because I've been with AT&T so long, VZ would be a lot more expensive "for me". What I end up paying on my family plan bill is $116/mo. I can't come close to that at VZ. As for the data, the $15 plan works for "me". I only went over twice - because I was on vacation. For the most part "I" am always in a wifi area. Most of my family and friends have VZ and they say they never drop calls and have awesome reception. Hence, I'm considering the leap, despite the bill.

I'm in the Albany, NY area. Up in the Adirondacks (where we camp), VZ has a tower & AT&T does not. Would give me coverage a little bit further north. Went to NYC for the day last month and my reception was spotty while my friend on VZ had full bars.

Most of my local family and friends here have VZ and love it. I've never been thrilled with AT&T, nor have I ever been super unhappy. I just figured, it's a cellphone, it's not going to ge perfect. It just seems worse lately. As a co-poster said, maybe it's my phone.

30mbs? Seriously? You meant to write that?

"Verizon is good" and "AT&T is good" are two VERY subjective terms. I've never had an issue with AT&Ts coverage where I live, nor have I had a problem at my local AT&T store with customer service. On the other hand, people I know with Verizon have terrible service around where I live.

It all is relevant. If AT&Ts service isn't satisfying you, switch. By no means is either better than the other. When it comes down to it, they both are expensive and will have spotty coverage at times.

The first step is to compare coverage maps. Why move to Verizon if they don't have good coverage in your area. Conversely, if they do you're all set.

OP - you're in Albany? I'd definitely give Verizon a chance then. As you noted you're sandwiched between little coverage in the Adirondacks (even if the tower works - it was completely down once in Lake Placid, ironically at a skating competition sponsored by AT&T!) and NYC. It's prime Verizon area and I'd be surprised if you didn't find it worth the switch.

personal choice

It really comes down to personal preference based upon geographical area, network coverage, preference of usually faster data speed or usually better voice quality, being grandfathered in with older plans, etc.

One of my friends works in an engineering firm in Los Angeles. At his work, AT&T is the ONLY carrier that gets a strong signal on his floor. At my parents' home AT&T is slightly better than Verizon in strength of signal. At my sister's home, Verizon has almost no signal in most of the house, but AT&T and Sprint have strong signals. In some other parts of my work, Verizon has a stronger signal.

I choose AT&T because I have the $30 unlimited data plan and don't want to lose it. Nowadays, most of my communication is via data (e.g.., email, text message, etc.). With busy work schedules, my family / friends are not always available the same time I am. So, data speed is more important to me.

I will say that AT&T customer service is horrible. I wish Apple would just start it's own wireless service and be free of the limitations of all the Big Three.
