What’s up with the home bar thing?! And there is no way to remove it?!

Nope you’re stuck with it

No way to remove it, although you can use it to switch apps and enable reachability, which is pretty handy. Worth it IMO.

Probably so that people (as in the typical consumer) have a visual cue to know it's there and can be used.
