So... It seems that Apple changed nothing. Well, at least I get to keep my 4G for another year... Maybe I'll buy a cheap iPhone 4 and use that.

Anyways, wow Apple, you call the iPod Touch a "amazing gaming device", and don't bother bumping anything on it.

Anyone have any thoughts on this update?

Kinda disappointed but it's nothing that the rumors haven't pointed to. I'm not complaining too much since I just got a iPod touch 4th gen in August. :)

It would have been ideal to bump it to the a5 chip.

Agreed... Even if all they did was upgrade the graphics/CPU, it would have been a nice update, and if they bumped the camera too, it would have been a no-brainer... But it looks like I'll go buy a iPhone 4 instead. Disable the radio, and I'd have a device with way more functionality than my current one for cheap. GPS, more RAM, nice display, pretty good battery life without the radio enabled, etc etc.

And we'll see, but it appears that only the iPhone 4S will support Assistant.

Thankfully, I have a offer on my 4G touch for $175 from a friend, and I could most likely end up upgrading to a iPH 4 for very little if this all works out.

Apple ****ed the duck yet again

Their shares are down and they won't have much business for awhile. IT's been too long for a small screen size which NEEDS to be larger for the to compete. Very disappointing.

The part where they brag about it being an amazing gaming device one second...

..and then the very next second say they didn't change anything.

Is ridicolous. Maybe they should have left the bragging out about it being a gaming leader, because they just screwed up big time...

My only guess...

Maybe they're taking a gamble this generation just to see what happens? They're in a massive lead anyway, and so maybe they're trying to see if more people will buy the iPhone...

Maybe they're trying to see if all us iPodders will upgrade to an iPhone if the ipod-touch is much downgraded for the generation.

Apple basically threw touch under the bus for an increased roll out of iphone.

Price drop of low end IPT4 to $199.

wow.

Why Apple did not do across the board drop, beats heck of out me.
I guess no competition?

we don't know yet if the memory was increased to 512MB.
From the lack of updates I don't have any confidence that the memory is better and if that is the case that it hasn't I would take a pass on it. It looks like Apple has lost interest in the Touch although they did make a point in saying the iPod business was important to them, but that may have been insincere since I recall numbers that say iPods count for 8% of Apples sales. I don't know if this means the Touch is EOL but it is possible.

That was what I was thinking

I was shocked when it was white color only and thats it.

I guess we can all still hope for 512MB RAM(albeit slim) since Apple doesn't announce ram updates.

Overall horrible update, not even a better camera, this is sad as hell.

i checked the specs in the "new" iPod touch.I didn't saw somewhere talking about the processor and the ram.So im confused

Well maybe they figure they dropped the price to $199, so why put a A5 chip in? They may be thinking they need all the A5 chips for iPhone and they could have a supply issue with them? They are going to sell like hotcakes at $199 for xmas still. Apple always has its reasons. It does suck though they did not get a bigger update. My iPod touch 2G 8GB is about died and I was hopping they were going to put out a new one with A5 and bigger screen.

iPod touch doesn't have competition- why would they change it? What could they have possibly done besides A5 or more ram? Don't say bigger screen, because it will never have a bigger screen than the iPhone.

Still a chance the $299 Touch has the A5 and more memory as website does not list CPU or memory specs.

Apple has previously lowered the price of the entry level Touch to $199 and stuck it with previous gen CPU while giving the more expensive Touch models the faster more current CPU. So there is some history for this.

If not congrats to those who bought a year ago.

That is true. But they made it clear when they did that. They made it clear that the 16 and 32 model have the same hardware as the current iphone, but the 8gb is last-gen hardware.

The competition is themselves. A lot of people choose to or are compelled to upgrade yearly. This puts a stop to all those sales.

So I decided to ditch the iTouch 4 because I was hoping for a new high quality camera... But with the new update (white iTouch) I should have just bought the iTouch 4 months ago.

So besides the white update for the iTouch, is that all? I heard there is a chip too? I'm not a techsavy person so I need help. :p

Also... What type of computer do I need to use the new iTouch? I have a Windows Vista, will that work (for iTunes)? I remember buying an iPod Nano and I had an old Windows and I couldn't use the Nano.

I think the competition to the Touch is the Kindle Fire. At the same price point of $199 the KF is
more interesting than the Touch now. Apple really blew it.

I'm dumfounded by how the ~$200 touch is still 8gb for the 5th year in a row. I was hopping for it to be at least 16gb. I've had my 8gb for years and was hoping to bump it up, I guess I may finally have to lay down the extra hundred dollars for the 32gb.

So no need to innovate the touch?

KF is for amazon products/services. At this point there is no streaming Netflix and you miss out on many apps if you pick the KF over the iPod touch. Also families who all have iPods and use iTunes will keep buying iPods. Apple does not have to come out with a new iPod every year. The fact that it is in white and at $199 it will sell like crazy for xmas. Also kids do like the camera and the KF does not have any cameras. But I guess it really depends on what you are going to use it for. If you said you were going to do a lot of reading and web browsing then I totally agree the KF is more interesting. Just my thought on the matter ^_^

Yeah, I'm still using my first generation 8GB model. It cost $299. At least the newer one is $100 less than mine was. I had been planning to upgrade but I might hold on for another year and hope for a 4" screen.

Me two. I have a 16GB first gen Touch and I don't have a compelling reason to upgrade this year. Maybe next year will see the Touch follow the design of the iPhone5 that we were expecting today.

- A5
- More RAM
- 128GB that I know many classic users have been waiting for and was the one selling point beyond the iPhone,
- larger screen (the iPhone should have got it too)
- change the backing to match body color to get rid of that scratch prone back.
- seek buttons by the home button (for those of us that use it as a music device don't need to look at it all the time to skip songs)
- IPS Panel
- 3G support (though to be fair this would probably rob from iPhone/iPad sales)
- Factory radio support
- Drop 8GB for 16GB (Its 2011 not 2007, 8GB is a freakin joke for what content is available for the touch)

Really those are just off the top of my head and for being a reported "gaming device" the A5 should have been put in. In fact as a gaming device some would argue it should exceed the other devices in performance.

I'm very much hoping that some other company will capitalize on these poor upgrades and wipe the floor with Apple in 2012 make them realize they can't just leave the same hardware sitting year after year. Apple is at its best when its threatened, they suck when they own the market.
